The Cement Garden and Atonement - Family Relationships and Problems in Ian McEwan´s Novels

Abstract:

Atonement and The Cement Garden rank among highly regarded works of the contemporary writer who is considered to be one of the most talented British authors of recent years - Ian McEwan. This paper provides the analysis of family relationships and problems portrayed in both novels. In order to provide background for the analysis of the works, the theoretical part includes a brief outline of the concept of family and family roles while the next part of the paper deals with the characterization of family relationships. The main part of the paper provides a detailed comparative analysis of family or personal problems that connect or distinguish the above mentioned novels.

Abstract:

Atonement a The Cement Garden se řadí mezi významná díla současného spisovatele, který je považován za jednoho z nejtalentovanějších britských autorů v současných letech - Iana McEwana. Tato práce poskytuje rozbor rodinných vztahů a problémů vyobrazených v obou románech. Pro nastínění rozboru děl obsahuje teoretická část stručný popis rodiny a rodinných rolí, zatímco další část práce se zabývá problematikou řešící charakteristiku rodinných vztahů. Hlavním cílem této práce je poskytnout detailní srovnávací analýzu rodinných či osobních problémů, které propojují nebo naopak odlišují výše uvedené romány.
