The theme of death in La Celestina by Fernando de Rojas

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis examines the reflection of the European medieval approach to death in the work La Celestina by the writer Fernando de Rojas. The methodology includes research of historical facts in expert monographs and research of the depiction of death in the work La Celestina. Key findings are then analyzed in individual scenes. This research revealed that the attitude towards death in La Celestina was strongly influenced by medieval traditions, however, in some places, one can already trace the influence of a new way of thinking about death, which is associated with a shift to a humanistic worldview during the Renaissance. It confirmed that death was a feared but also idealized phenomenon in the fifteenth century. Furthermore, it showed that sudden death, or death by one's own hand, was condemned.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá promítáním evropského středověkého přístupu ke smrti v díle La Celestina z pera spisovatele Fernanda de Rojase. Metodologie zahrnuje výzkum historických faktů v odborných monografiích a výzkum zobrazení smrti v díle La Celestina. Stěžejní poznatky jsou poté analyzovány v jednotlivých scénách. Tento výzkum odhalil, že postoj ke smrti v díle La Celestina byl silně ovlivněn středověkými tradicemi, ale místy lze už vystopovat vlivy nového způsobu přemýšlení o smrti, které jsou spjaté s posunem k humanistickému vidění světa v období renesance. Potvrdil, že smrt byla v patnáctém století jevem obávaným, ale zároveň idealizovaným. Dále prokázal, že náhlá smrt, či smrt z vlastního přičinění byla odsuzována.
