The Semiotics of Flowers in Impressionist Painting: Studies in Aesthetics

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce Sémiotika květin v malbě Impresionismu: Studie o Estetice se zaměřuje na estetiku zobrazení květin v uměleckých dílech v období impresionismu, konkrétně ve druhé polovině 19. století. Práce analyzuje, jak umělci tohoto období zacházeli s motivem květin v rámci svých malířských kompozic a jaký význam měly tyto květiny pro celkový dojem jejich děl. V úvodní části se zabývá základními principy sémiotiky, na kterou navazuje shrnutí pojmu symbol. V následující části vysvětluje pojem květiny a poukazuje na jednotlivé kategorie, podle kterých jsou květiny hodnoceny a zkoumány vlivem estetiky. Poslední část práce zkoumá hlavní charakteristiky impresionismu, jeho vliv na výtvarné umění a základní autory a jejich díla. Sémiotický přístup je následně věnován analýze, jak umělci využívali květiny jako znakové prvky ve svých obrazech, zdůrazňující stylizaci, kompozici a výrazové prostředky.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis The Semiotics of Flowers in Impressionist Painting: A Study of Aesthetics focuses on the aesthetics of the depiction of flowers in works of art during the Impressionist period, specifically the second half of the 19th century. It analyses how artists of the period treated the subject of flowers in their paintings and the importance of these flowers to the overall impression of their works. The introductory part of the thesis deals with the basic principles of semiotics, followed by a summary of the concept of symbol. In the following section, the concept of flowers is explained and the different categories by which flowers are evaluated and studied under the influence of aesthetics are pointed out. The last part of the thesis examines the main characteristics of Impressionism, its influence on the visual arts and the main artists and their works. The semiotic approach is then devoted to an analysis of how artists used flowers as emblematic elements in their paintings, emphasising stylisation, composition and means of expression.
