Child Soldier in the Novels of Subsaharan Africa

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the analysis of two main child soldier characters - in the novels Johnny Chien Méchant by a Congolese author Emmanuel Dongala and Song for Night by a Nigerian author Chris Abani. First, the thesis presents the historical, geographical, and political context of the sub-Saharan region. The following part focuses on the juridical definition and the characteristics of a child soldier. The thesis then looks into the biographies of the authors and summaries of the novels. Finally follows an analysis of the literary characters, their comparison, and the question of guilt.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se věnuje analýze dvou hlavních postav dětského vojáka v románech Johnny Chien Méchant od konžského autora Emmanuel Dongala a Song for Night od nigerijského autora Chris Abani. V první části je představen historicko-geograficko-politický kontext subsaharského regionu, následuje právní vymezení a charakteristika dětského vojáka. V další kapitole je zároveň s biografií obou autorů nastíněn obsah děl. Poslední část je věnována analýze literárních postav, jejich porovnání a hledání odpovědi na otázku viny.
