The Decadent Eros in the work of Pierre Louÿs

Abstract:

This doctoral thesis deals with the work of the French Decadent poet and writer, dandy and libertine, Pierre Louÿs (1870-1925), who devoted his entire life to erotic and pornographic writings. This dissertation aims to analyse the author's decadent concept of Eros and place it in a relevant cultural and historical context. Louÿs’ controversial writings, reflecting both the elegant sensuality and literary refinement of fin-de-siècle and its rawness and perversion, are based on figure de la Femme – the figure of Woman. This thesis attempts to reveal the reason and the way she becomes the central notion of the author’s aesthetics. The introductory chapter presents an overview of the historical, social and aesthetic context of the times. The second chapter depicts the status of Woman and the concept of Eros in fin-de-siècle art. The third chapter is devoted to Pierre Louÿs and explores his family roots, literary inspiration and work. It also outlines the author’s relationship to several women, especially Marie de Heredia, who seems to have affected his entire writings. The fourth chapter portrays Louys’s most significant literary heroines. Abstract:

Tato disertační práce pojednává o díle francouzského dekadentního spisovatele a básníka, dandyho a libertina, Pierra Louÿse (1870-1925), který svůj život zasvětil erotické a pornografické tvorbě. Disertační práce si klade za cíl analyzovat autorovo dekadentní pojetí Erótu a zasadit jej do dobového kulturně-historického kontextu. Ústřední postavou Louÿsova bohatého díla, odrážejícího jak elegantní smyslnost a literární vytříbenost fin-de-sièclu, tak jeho syrovost a perverznost, je přitom Žena. Cílem této práce je ukázat, jak a proč se stala klíčovým pojem autorovy estetiky. Úvodní kapitola dizertace představuje přehled historických, společenských a estetických souvislostí daného období. Druhá kapitola přináší dobový pohled na Ženu a popis dekadentního pojetí Erótu. Třetí kapitola je věnována Pierru Louÿsovi: zkoumá jeho rodinné kořeny, literární inspirace a uměleckou tvorbu a zároveň nastiňuje autorův vztah k několika ženám, zejména k Marie de Heredia, která, jak se zdá, měla na jeho dílo zásadní vliv. Čtvrtá kapitola se zabývá portréty Louÿsových nejvýznačnějších literárních hrdinek. Poslední dvě kapitoly přinášejí složitou analýzu Louÿsova ambivalentního pojetí Erótu a rovněž autorovo literární ztvárnění Ženy, která se v jeho díle profiluje
