Spear as a symbol of power and distribution of power from the center on the periphery

Abstract:

Statusové symboly sloužily od nepaměti jako něco, čím se vysoce postavení jedinci odlišovali od okolní společnosti. Mezi takové symboly se tradičně řadí koruna, žezlo, meč nebo například kopí. Kopí hrálo v raném středověku podstatnou roli v souvislosti se statusovými symboly. Nešlo jen o obyčejnou zbraň, nýbrž i o symbol moci vysoce postavených jedinců. Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá kopím jako symbolem moci, přičemž se na základě hrobových nálezů kopí snaží zjistit, zda mohla indikovat přítomnost velkomoravských elit v okrajových částech. Nejprve je v práci nastíněn význam kopí ve sledu dějin a struktura raně středověké společnosti. Následuje výběr literatury a stručná zmínka o ikonografických pramenech, které jsou pro téma stěžejním pramenem. Celá práce je rozdělena na dvě hlavní části. První je katalog moravských nálezů kopí, na který navazuje historické zhodnocení těchto nálezů. Poslední řádky jsou věnované závěrečnému slovu, které celou práci uzavírá.

Abstract:

Since time immemorial, status symbols have served as something to distinguish highranking individuals from the surrounding society. Traditionally, such symbols include the crown, scepter, sword, and spear. The spear seems to have played a significant role in the context of status symbols in the early Middle Ages. It was not just an ordinary weapon, but also a symbol of the power of highranking individuals. This thesis examines the spear as a symbol of power, using the grave finds of spears to determine whether they may have indicated the presence of Great Moravian elites in the periphery. The thesis first outlines the importance of the spear in the sequence of history and the structure of early medieval society. This is followed by a selection of literature and a brief mention of the iconographic sources that are central to the topic. The whole thesis is divided into two main parts. The first is a catalogue of Moravian spear finds, followed by a historical evaluation of these finds. The last lines are devoted to the final word, which concludes the whole work.
