Stereotypes and Archetypal Constructions in Contemporary American Race Discourse

Anotácia:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou stereotypů a archetypů o Afroameričanech a jejich zobrazení v komentářích v rámci veřejných diskusí k novinovým článkům publikovaným na internetu. Cílem této práce je dokázat negativní vliv těchto stereotypů a archetypů v souvislosti s tím, jakým způsobem současní Američané vnímají Afroameričany. Úvodní část této práce se zabývá stručnou charakteristikou vztahu bílých Američanů a Afroameričanů, přičemž se soustředí především na historii tohoto vztahu, která značně ovlivnila jeho současný charakter. Následující dvě kapitoly se skládají z definice archetypů a stereotypů týkajících se Afroameričanů, které jsou dále použity pro analýzu jednotlivých komentářů. Třetí kapitola se zabývá charakteristikou současných rasovo-orientovaných diskuzí ve Spojených státech a způsobu, jakým se s Afroameričany v těchto diskuzích zachází. Tato kapitola také obsahuje samotnou analýzu vybraných komentářů, která dokazuje, že vlastnosti všech daných stereotypů z teoretické části této práce, jakož i známky vlivu projekce archetypů, se nacházejí v každé ze sérií analyzovaných komentářů, bez ohledu na to, o jaký typ diskuse se jedná (tzn., jestli je diskuse moderována nebo ne). Výsledkem této bakalářské práce je tedy tvrzení, že stereotypy a archetypy o Afroameričanech negativně ovlivňují způsob, jakým jsou Afroameričané vnímáni v současných rasovo-orientovaných diskuzích ve Spojených státech.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis offers an analysis of the stereotypes and archetypal constructions regarding African Americans as they appear in public comments to the newspaper articles published on the Internet. The aim of the thesis is to confirm the negative influence of the stereotypes and archetypes on the way in which contemporary Americans perceive African Americans. The introductory chapter offers a brief characterization of the relationship between white Americans and African Americans, especially its historical background which influenced its contemporary characteristics. In the following two chapters, the thesis gives a definition of the archetypal constructions and the stereotypes related to African Americans, which are subsequently used for the analysis of the public comments. The third chapter characterizes contemporary American race discourse and the ways in which African Americans are treated within this discourse; it also gives the very analysis of the comments. The analysis reveals that the characteristics of all the stereotypes discussed in the theoretical part of the thesis, as well as hints of the archetypal projection can be found in each set of the analyzed comments, regardless the type of a discussion (moderated or not) to which the set relates. Thus, the outcome of the thesis is an assertion that the stereotypes and archetypal constructions regarding African Americans negatively influence the way African Americans are perceived in contemporary American race discourse.
