The Problem of Deforestation in the Mediterranian Area in the Late Antiquity

Abstract:

The aim of the bachelor thesis is to find out whether there was a massive deforestation in the Mediterranean area in late antiquity, around the 5th and 6th century. To achieve the results, we gradually described various functions of forests, which are divided and specifically described in individual chapters. Each of them draws conclusion that points to dense forest cover or on the contrary lack thereof. We considered the function of warfare as one of the most encumbering for timber extraction and that is why the chapter received more of our attention. Further, we analyze the beautiful literature including evident respect and love for the forests, laws, which point to the forest protection and various reports and regulations according to which it can be concluded that the areas did not suffer from the lack of forests. The method of analysis and comparison of available primary sources also compares the Germanic environment with our target environment. On the other hand, we found areas with extensive deforestation, that caused they are negatively affected until today, like Libanon. Due to the number of contradictions we found in the thesis we conclude, that at the end of antiquity in the Roman Empire were some areas sufficiently forested whilst some of them were not.

Abstract:

Cieľom záverečnej práce bolo zistiť, či dochádzalo k masívnemu odlesňovaniu v oblasti Stredomorí koncom antiky, približne v 5. až 6. storočí. K výsledku sme sa dopracovali postupným popisovaním jednotlivých funkcií lesa, ktoré sú rozdelené a podrobne opísané v jednotlivých kapitolách. Z každej jednej je vyvodený záver, ktorý poukazuje na hustú lesnatosť alebo práve naopak na jej nedostatok. Funkciu vojenstva sme zhodnotili ako tú, ktorá najviac zaťažovala ťažbu dreva, preto sme tejto kapitole venovali väčšiu pozornosť. Ďalej analyzujeme krásnu literatúru, z ktorej je evidentná úcta a láska k lesom, taktiež zákony, ktoré poukazujú na ochranu lesov, a rôzne správy a nariadenia, podľa ktorých je možné usúdiť, že dané oblasti netrpeli nedostatkom lesov. Metódou analýze a porovnávania dostupných primárnych prameňov sa porovnáva aj germánske prostredie s naším cieľovým prostredím. Na druhej strane sme sa dopracovali aj k oblastiam, kde naopak dochádzalo k veľkému výrubu lesov a tieto prostredia sú tým postihnuté do dnes, napr. Libanon. Vzhľadom na niekoľko protikladov, ku ktorým sme sa v práci dopracovali usudzujeme, že na konci antiky v Rímskej ríši bolo lesov v niektorých oblastiach dostatok a niekde zas pomenej.
