Voices Echo Down the Mountain: The Relationship Between Men, Women, and the Land in the Literature of Appalachia

Abstract:

Apalačská literatura je zvláštní odvětví regionální literatury, žánr, který zahrnuje nejen určité vlastnosti, ale také určitá místa. Zkoumala jsem mnoho apalačských textů a zjistila jsem, že země, vztahy žen a mužů k ní a k sobě navzájem jsou jen některá z nejdůležitějších společných témat literatury této oblasti. Pohlaví autorů, konkrétní část hor, o níž píší nebo z níž volají, či časové období, v němž píší nejsou tak důležité jako univerzální témata země a jejího vlivu na její obyvatele. Pro účely této práce jsem si vybrala ke zkoumání celkem šest románů: The Tall Woman, Between the Flowers, Fair and Tender Ladies, Daughter of the Legend, Gap Creek, and A Parchment of Leaves. Ve všech šesti románech je země přítomná jako živoucí, dýchající bytost, která umí být laskavá i krutá, ale je vždy nepředvídatelná a především nádherná. Lid a zemi od sebe nelze oddělit, ani fyzicky, ani emocionálně. Ženy v domech i muži na polích odráží charakteristiku hor. Tento trojúhelník mužů, žen a země je významným, snad nejvýznamnějším tématem v apalačské literatuře. Můj rozbor vztahů mezi ženami a zemí zahrnuje fyzické a duchovní spojení žen s Apalačskou oblastí, místa, jimž se připisují pohlaví – jako dům a zahrada, které jsou nejvíce jejich domovem – a strasti a tragédie, které tak často tvoří život horských žen. V diskuzi o poutu mužů a apalačskou krajinou se soustředím také na fyzické a duchovní spojení s regionem, protějšky míst mužů, jako například pole a stodola, dominance násilí v životě mužů a mnohem větší aspekt pohybu v jejich životech. V závěrečné části své práce se věnuji vztahu žen a mužů těchto hor, jak je představený v dotyčných textech.

Abstract:

Appalachian literature is a distinct branch of regional literature, a genre that encompasses not only certain qualities but certain places. I have examined numerous Appalachian texts and have discovered that the land, men’s and women’s relationship to it and to each other are some of the most important connecting themes of the region’s literature. The gender of the authors, the particular part of the mountains they write about or hail from, or the time period in which they write is not as significant as the universal subjects of the land and its effects upon its inhabitants. For the purposes of this thesis, I choose to examine a total of six novels: The Tall Woman, Between the Flowers, Fair and Tender Ladies, Daughter of the Legend, Gap Creek, and A Parchment of Leaves. In all six of these novels, the earth is presented as a living, breathing entity that can be both cruel and kind, but it is always unpredictable and above all, beautiful. The people and the land cannot be separated, either physically or emotionally. Both women in their houses and men in their fields reflect characteristics of the mountains. This triangle of men, women, and the land is a significant, perhaps the most important, theme in Appalachian literature. My analysis of the relationship between women and the land will encompass the women’s physical and spiritual connections to Appalachia, the gendered spaces - such as the house and garden in which they are most at home – and the hardships and tragedy that so often make up a mountain woman’s life. In the discussion of the bond between men and the land of Appalachia, I will focus also on their physical and spiritual connections to the region, the gendered spaces of men such as the field and barn, the prevalence of violence in the life of men, and the much more mobile aspect of their lifestyle. In the final section of my thesis, I will address the relationship between the men and women of these mountains as it is represented in the texts.
