Analysis of light curve of RR Lyrae type star

Abstract:

Předložená bakalářská práce se zabývá studiem hvězdy LP Cam, která patří do skupiny pulzujících proměnných hvězd typu RR Lyrae. Hvězda byla pozorována během devíti nocí na Hvězdárně a planetáriu v Brně, při kterých se podařilo zachytit čtyři maxima jasnosti. Měření byla následně zkalibrována na standardní Johnsonův fotometrický systém. Zachycená maxima spolu s dalšími známými okamžiky maxim posloužila ke konstrukci O - C diagramu. Pomocí něj byla zpřesněna perioda a okamžik základního maxima. V programu Cepheus byla fázová křivka rozložena na sumu goniometrických funkcí, jejichž parametry byly použity pro výpočet Fourierových koeficientů. Ty byly následně dosazeny do empirických vztahů, které umožnily určit základní fyzikální parametry LP Cam. Bylo rovněž zjištěno, že ve směru ke hvězdě se nachází prostředí s vysokou extinkcí a hvězda se tak jeví mnohem slabší a dál, než by byla, nebýt tohoto zeslabení. Ukázalo se také, že má neobvykle vysokou metalicitu ve srovnání s ostatními hvězdami typu RR Lyrae, což je zřejmě způsobeno tím, že leží v disku Mléčné dráhy.

Abstract:

Presented bachelor thesis is focused on a RR Lyrae type pulsating star LP Cam. This star was observed during nine nights at the Observatory and planetarium in Brno, during which four brightness maxima were detected. Measurements were subsequently calibrated to the standard Johnson photometric system. Captured maximum timings together with other known moments of maximum light were used for construction of the O - C diagram, which was utilized for period and zero epoch refinement. Phased light curve was decomposed by Fourier techniques in Cepheus software. Parameters of the fit allowed calculation of Fourier coeficients, which were subsequently put into empirical relations. Based on these calibrations, basic physical parameters of LP Cam were estimated. It was also found that in the direction of the star is an environment with high extinction. Therefore, it appears much more fainter, and in larger distance, than it would be without this absorption. Also this star has unusually high metallicity in comparison with other RR Lyrae stars, which is probably caused by its position in the disk of the Milky way.
