Absurd in French theatre of Dada and presurrealism

Abstract:

The aim of this doctoral dissertation is to analyze the absurd as an aesthetic category in French theatre between 1916 and 1923, dealing with three texts : La Première aventure céleste de Monsieur Antipyrine by Tristan Tzara (1916), S’il vous plaît, by André Breton et Philippe Soupault (written in 1919) and Les Mystères de l’amour by Roger Vitrac (written in 1923). The topic of the absurd as an aesthetic category was put before theatre and literary critics as well as wide public by the British drama critic Martin Esslin, author of the conception of the ‘theatre of the absurd’, which he applicated in the avant-garde theatre of the 1950´s. This conception has reached both popularity and deep critics, being considered as poignant as well as imprecise and vague. Thus, this dissertation shall not use M. Esslin´s conception as its starting point, bur shall attempt to define the category of the absurd in drama and theatre independently. In the conclusion nevertheless, it shall proceed to a comparison with M. Esslin´s contribution. The first chapter of the thesis shall define the absurd as an aesthetic and theatre category, then, it shall observe the evolution of the aesthetic absurd in theatre history, before all in France in the post-classical period. The second part shall analyze the absurd elements in the chosen texts, as regards narrative and also discursive structures.

Abstract:

Cílem disertační práce je analyzovat absurdno jako estetickou kategorii v divadle francouzských avantgard v letech 1916-1923. Práce se zaměří na tři texty: První nebeské dobrodružství pana Antipyrina (Tristan Tzara, 1916), Račte? (André Breton - Philippe Soupault, napsáno v r. 1919) a Les Mystères de l’amour (Roger Vitrac, napsáno v r. 1923). Problamatiku estetického absurdna postavil do popředí zájmu divadelní a literární kritiky i široké veřejnosti britský divadelní kritik Martin Esslin, autor koncepce tzv. "absurdního dramatu", již aplikoval na avantgardní divadlo 50. let 20. století. Esslinova práce byla a je jak vysoce hodnocena, tak kritizována pro nepřesnost, ne-li vágnost. Z tohoto důvodu tato disertační práce nebude koncepci M. Esslina přebírat, naopak se pokusí absurdno v divadle a dramatu definovat samostatně ; v závěru vlastní pojetí absurdna s Esslinovým porovná. První kapitola disertace vymezí absurdno jako estetickou, dramatickou a divadelní kategorii, poté bude sledovat vývoj absurdna v divadelní historii, především ve francouzském postklasickém divadle. Hlavní část bude sestávat ze tří analýz, jež se budou věnovat zvoleným textům, které rozeberou po stránce narativních i diskursivních struktur.
