Attitude of the Faculty of Medicine Univerisity of Ostrava students to preventive examinations

Abstract:

Introduction: Prevention is a significant part of healthcare. In spite of the fact that a human-being is feeling well, one should not avoid regular preventive medical examination which might in many cases reveal illness in stage that is well treatable. The goal of the practical part was to investigate approach of students of the Faculty of Medicine of University of Ostrava towards preventive medical examinations. Methodology: Data were collected via anonymous questionnaire comprising of 17 questions. Research was executed from year 2011 to year 2015 with 471 respondents. Respondents were students of the Faculty of Medicine of University of Ostrava, particularly students of the first class of General Medicine Department. Information gained from the questionnaire was inserted into program EpiData. Test ?2 , Fisher exact test and t-test for two selections were used for statistical evaluation. Statistical tests were evaluated in program Stata v.13 on 5% significance level. Results: Out of the whole lot of respondents 69 % were women and 31 % men, average age of respondents was 19,8 years. Students were best informed on preventive medical examination at stomatologists. Students most often experienced preventive medical examination at stomatologists (87 %). Secondly, preventive medical examinations were attended at general practitioner by 76 % students. Preventive medical examination at the gynaecologist was attended by 73 % women. The most occurred reasoning of not attending the preventive medical examinations was that the students neither had any health problems nor they had the time. Only 87 % students were aware of their blood pressure, however, more than half of them did not know their glycemia or cholesterol values. About 25 % students suffered of chronical illnesses. More than three quarters of students were engaged in sports, most frequently it was a sport activity of about 1-2 hours weekly. Men were engaged in sports more than women (p < 0,001). Approximately 19 % of respondents were occasional or regular smokers, with no significant difference in gender (p = 0,589). Only 8 % students were aware of preventive programmes provided by health insurance companies. Conclusion: Women were more informed on the preventive medical examination issues than men and women more often attended the medical examinations. Students? attendance at the preventive medical examinations was 76 %. Attendance of students at the preventive medical examination was floating in the individual years of research.

Úvod: Prevencia je neoddeliteľnou súčasťou starostlivosti o zdravie a aj napriek tomu, že sa človek cíti zdravý, nemal by zabúdať na preventívne prehliadky, ktoré v niektorých prípadoch môžu odhaliť ochorenie v štádiu, v ktorom je ešte dobre liečiteľné. Cieľom praktickej časti bolo zistiť prístup študentov Lékařské fakulty Ostravské univerzity k preventívnych prehliadkam. Metodika: Dáta boli zbierané prostredníctvom anonymného dotazníka, ktorý obsahoval 17 otázok. Prieskum prebiehal v rokoch 2011 až 2015 a celkovo sa do prieskumu zapojilo 471 respondentov. Respondenti boli študenti Lékařské fakulty Ostravské univerzity, konkrétne študenti 1. ročníka Všeobecného lekárstva. Informácie z dotazníka boli následne vložené do programu EpiData. Pre štatistické hodnotenie bol použitý ?2 test, Fisherov exaktný test a t-test pre dva výbery. Štatistické testy boli hodnotené v programe Stata v.13 na 5% hladine významnosti. Výsledky: Z celého súboru 69 % tvorili ženy a 31 % muži, priemerný vek respondentov bol 19,8 rokov. Študenti sú najlepšie informovaní o preventívnych prehliadkach u stomatológa. Najčastejšie študenti absolvovali preventívne prehliadky u stomatológa (87 %). Ďalej nasledovali preventívne prehliadky u praktického lekára, ktoré absolvovalo 76 % študentov. Preventívne prehliadky u gynekológa absolvovalo 73 % žien. Medzi najčastejšie dôvody, pre ktoré sa študenti nezúčastnili na preventívnych prehliadkach bolo to, že študenti nepociťujú zdravotné problémy alebo nemali čas. Hodnoty svojho krvného tlaku pozná 87 % študentov, ale naopak, viac ako polovica z nich nepozná hodnotu svojej glykémie či cholesterolu. Na chronické ochorenie sa lieči 25 % študentov. Viac ako tri štvrtiny študentov športuje, najčastejšie ide o športovú aktivitu trvajúcu 1-2 hodiny týždenne. Športu sa venujú viac muži ako ženy (p < 0,001). Príležitostní aj pravidelní fajčiari tvorili 19 %, rozdiel medzi pohlavím nebol štatisticky významný (p = 0,589). O preventívnych programoch zdravotných poisťovní má povedomie iba 8 % študentov. Záver: O rozmedzí preventívnych prehliadok sú lepšie informované ženy ako muži, rovnako sa na nich aj častejšie zúčastňujú. Celková účasť študentov na preventívnych prehliadkach u praktického lekára bola 76 %. Účasť študentov na preventívnych prehliadkach v jednotlivých rokoch prieskumu kolísala.
