Study of the Effect of Gamma Tadiation on the Properties of Composites Based on Polyethylene with Antimicrobial Additive

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce bylo zkoumání vlivu ionizačního gama záření na vybrané vlastnosti a strukturu kompozitního materiálu tvořeného polyethylenem s příměsí dřevní moučky jako nosiče antimikrobiální příměsi. Teoretická část bakalářské práce je zaměřena na využití polymerních materiálů v obalové technice, je zde přiblížen druhu použitého polyolefinu a použité antimikrobiální příměsi a popsán vliv ionizačního záření na strukturu a vlastnosti polymerních materiálů. Experimentální část bakalářské práce se zabývá srovnáním vzorků čistého PE s PE se 30 hmotn. % dřevní moučky obsahující antimikrobiální látku allylanisole, které byly vystaveny různým dávkám gama záření o síle 0, 10, 30 a 50 kGy. Vliv gama záření na mechanické vlastnosti a strukturu materiálu byl zkoumán pomocí mechanických zkoušek a rotační reologie. Stupeň síťování materiálu, ke kterému dochází během radiace, byl taktéž vyhodnocen z podílu gelové frakce. Naměřená data doplňuje test uvolňování antimikrobiální příměsi. Všechny výsledky experimentů byly porovnány s neozářenými materiály a s materiály neobsahujícími antimikrobiální příměs. Testování prokázalo, že ozáření má zanedbatelný vliv na mechanické vlastnosti, ale podstatně ovlivňuje stupeň zesíťování vzorků, tím pádem i rychlost uvolňování obsaženého antimikrobiálního aditiva.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is investigation of the influence of various doses of ionizing gamma radiation on the selected properties and structure of polyethylene and composite of PE in mixture with wood flour as an antimicrobial dopant carries of natural terpene Alyllanisole The theoretical part the bachelor thesis is focused on the utilization of polymer materials in packaging technology, especiallypolyolefin, explain the role of the antimicrobial additive in food industry and the influence of ionizing radiation on the structure and properties of polymer materials. The experimental part of this bachelor thesis deals with the comparison of samples of pure PE and PE with 30 % wood flour containing a given amount of antimicrobial additive, which were irradiated by gamma radiation at various doses of 0, 10, 30 and 50 kGy. The influence of irradiation on the mechanical properties and structure of the material has been investigated by mechanical testing and rotation rheology. The degree of crosslinking of the material was also evaluated from the gel fraction testing. Finally the release test of antimicrobial compound Alyllanisole were performed. All experimental results were compared with non-irradiated and non-antimicrobial materials. The findingresults have shown, that irradiation has negligible effect on the mechanical properties of samples, but significantly affects the degree of crosslinking of the materials and the rate of release of the contained antimicrobial additive.
