Communication, intimacy and commitment in long-distance relationships in emerging adulthood

Abstract:

Tato studie se zabývá vztahy na dálku v období vynořující se dospělosti v českém prostředí. Výzkumu se zúčastnilo celkem 224 respondentů, kteří považují svůj aktuální vztah za vztah na dálku a od partnera jsou odloučeni alespoň dva dny v týdnu. Zkoumána zde byla souvislost mezi nejčastěji preferovaným způsobem komunikace partnerů při odloučení, rozsahem jejich zprostředkované komunikace při odloučení, množstvím osobního kontaktu partnerů a jimi pociťovanou intimitou a závazkem. Pro měření intimity byla použita Miller Social Intimacy Scale a pro měření závazku subškála měřící závazek metody The Investment Model Scale. Informace o vztahu a komunikaci partnerů byly zjišťovány pomocí dotazníku vytvořeného v rámci této studie. Získaná data byla statisticky analyzována pomocí t-testu, korelace a regresní analýzy. Bylo potvrzeno, že partneři, kteří při odloučení preferují synchronní způsoby komunikace, pociťují vyšší míru intimity než partneři, kteří preferují asynchronní způsoby. Dále byl zjištěn významný vztah mezi rozsahem komunikace partnerů při odloučení a intimitou, i mezi rozsahem komunikace a závazkem. Potvrdilo se také, že množství osobního kontaktu partnerů je významným prediktorem intimity i závazku.

Abstract:

This study explores the long-distance relationships in emerging adulthood in czech enviroment. The research sample consisted of 224 respondents who consider their actual relationship as long-distance relationship and are separated from their partner at least for two days per week. There was examined relationships between the most preferred channel of partner´s communication during separation, extent of their communication during separation, amount of their personal contact and perceived intimacy and commit-ment. For intimacy measurement Miller Social Intimacy Scale and for commitment measurement subscale of commitment of The Investment Model Scale were used. Information about relationship and partner´s communication were assessed through questionnaire developed for purpose of this study. Obtained data were statistically analyzed using t-test, correlation and regression analysis. It was confirmed that partners who prefer synchronous channels of communication during separation perceive higher level of intimacy than partners who prefer asynchronous channels. Next a significant relationship between extent of communication during separation and intimacy was found as well as extent of communication and commitment. It was also confirmed that amount of partner´s personal contact is a significant predictor of intimacy and also of commitment
