Where is Northern Italy? Lega Nord and its Constituency

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce vymezuje hranici severní Itálie z hlediska identifikace obyvatel, kteří se považují za seveřany. Hranice je stanovena na základě analýzy volebních výsledků parlamentních voleb 2008 se zaměřením na proseversky orientovanou stranu Liga Severu, která v minulosti požadovala mj. secesi severní části země a vytvoření samostatného státu Padánie. Předpokladem je, že lidé, považující se za seveřany, se identifikují s rétorikou strany, a proto stranu volí. Práce staví na kontextuálním přístupu, který předpokládá, že jedincovo volební chování je ovlivněno prostředím, ve kterém žije. Dále práce ve čtyřech kapitolách popisuje vývoj moderních autonomistických tendencí v severní Itálii, vymezuje stranu v italském politickém systému, popisuje vývoj, ideologii, program a charakteristiku strany, detailně rozebírá volební výsledky z roku 2008 a porovnává požadovanou hranici z kulturně regionálního hlediska. Výstupem jsou čtyři mapy. Stěžejní z nich vyobrazuje právě onu hranici severní Itálie.

Abstract:

This Thesis defines the border of Northern Italy in terms of identification of residents who consider themselves as northerners. Establishment of that border is based on the analysis of electoral results of the parliamentary elections in 2008, focusing on the italian party Lega Nord, which in the past called for secession of the northern part of the country and creation of an independent state called Padania. The main assumption is that people who consider themselves northerners, identify themselves with the rhetoric of the party, and therefore vote for the party. The Thesis is built on the contextual approach, which assumes that an individual's voting behavior is influenced by the environment which they live in. Further the Thesis in four chapters describes the development of modern autonomist tendencies in northern Italy, defines the party within the Italian political system, describes the development, ideology, and the characteristic, as well as the election program, analyzes the election results of 2008 in detail, and compares the required border from the cultural-regional perspective. The main output of this Thesis are four maps. The most important one presents the northern border of Italy.
