The influence of environmental variables and dispersal abilities on distribution of aquatic macroinvertebrate larvae in isolated spring fens

Abstract:

Cílem dizertační práce je přispět k hlubšímu poznání mechanismů určujících složení metaspolečenstev, jednomu z ústředních témat současné ekologie. Moderní výzkum se nejčastěji zaměřuje na určení vlivu lokálních podmínek prostředí (tzn. “species sorting”) a prostorových procesů, které jsou výsledkem rozdílných schopností šíření jednotlivých druhů (tzn. neutrální hypotéza). Tento úkol je mnohdy velmi obtížný kvůli složitosti vztahů mezi společenstvy a jejich prostředím, nemožnosti oddělit často nevyhnutelně spjaté vlivy prostředí a prostoru a neznalost podrobných vlastností druhů. Prameništní slatiniště představují ideální modelový systém pro testování těchto ekologických otázek a teorií. Tyto biotopy poskytují útočiště rozmanitému a druhově bohatému společenstvu s vysokým podílem druhů, které jsou na toto specifické prostředí vázané. Slatiniště jsou považována za velmi stabilní prostředí především kvůli stálému průtokovému a teplotnímu režimu, což je odlišuje od ostatních vodních biotopů. Mají obvykle malou rozlohu, jsou dobře vymezené v okolním suchozemském prostředí a dobře izolované od ostatních slatinišť, díky čemuž není tak obtížné odlišit druhy specializované na život v prameništích (tzn. specialisty) a druhy schopné osídlovat i jiné vodní biotopy (tzn. generalisty). Tato dizertační práce se zaměřuje na společenstva vodních bezobratlých obývajících prameništní slatiniště v Západních Karpatech. Celkem bylo studováno 62 zachovalých, lučních slatinišť, bylo zaznamenáno 43 proměnných prostředí a ve 353 vzorcích bylo nalezeno a určeno 361 424 jedinců z 608 taxonů. Výskyt vodních bezobratlých byl určen především lokálními podmínkami prostředí a to bez ohledu na taxonomickou příslušnost jednotlivých druhů. Na druhou stranu důležitým ukazatelem změn byl způsob šíření a také habitatová specializace druhů. Společenstva pasivně se šířících organismů vykazovala signifikantní prostorovou strukturovanost a pasivně se šířící slatiništní specialisté dokonce vůbec průkazně nereagovali na lokální proměnné prostředí. Signifikantní prostorový signál byl nalezen také u druhů hojně se vyskytujících na slatiništích, nejspíše kvůli imigraci jedinců z okolních stanovišť (tzv. mass efekt). Převažující vliv lokálního prostředí se projevoval jako efekt průtokových podmínek, vlastností substrátu, minerální bohatosti vody, teploty vody a klimatických podmínek. Vliv jednotlivých proměnných prostředí se ovšem lišil mezi jednotlivými mesohabitaty, což vyústilo ve změny ve složení společenstev, tzv. beta diverzitu. Tyto změny byly způsobeny výměnou druhů mezi mesohabitaty a změny v druhové bohatosti, nicméně relativní důležitost těchto dvou mechanismů se u různých skupin bezobratlých lišila. Nalezené rozdíly mezi specialisty a generalisty, které byly diskutovány v této práci, podporují nutnost a vhodnost funkčního pohledu na společenstvo v ekologických studiích. Nejen, že složení společenstva těchto dvou skupin bylo určeno rozdílnými faktory, rozdíly byly nalezeny také v prediktorech určujících druhovou bohatost, v individuálních odpovědích jednotlivých druhů na prostředí slatinišť a důležitosti vlivu velikosti a stáří slatiniště. Slatiništní specialisté vykazovali větší vazbu na specifické podmínky slatinišť dané chemismem vody a stabilitou teplotního režimu, která souvisí s rozvojem vegetačního pokryvu a akumulací rašeliny. Generalisté naopak reagovali na průtokové podmínky a vlastnosti substrátu a byli také ovlivněni biogeografickými parametry jednotlivých slatinišť.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of structuring mechanisms driving the composition of metacommunities, one of the central issues of contemporary ecology. The modern research focuses mainly on disentangling the roles of local environmental conditions (i.e. species sorting) and spatial processes resulting from different dispersal abilities of species (i.e. neutral hypothesis). The task is often challenging due to a complexity of interconnected relationships between communities and environment, inability to separate necessarily dependent effects of the environment and space and/or lack of information about detailed species traits. Spring fens represent the ideal model system for testing such ecological topics and theories. These habitats host diverse and species-rich communities with high proportion of species adapted to this specific environment. Spring fens are considered very stable in their flow and water temperature regime, which distinguish them from other aquatic habitats. They are usually small-sized, well delimited in terrestrial surrounding and highly isolated from each other, which makes it easier to distinguish between species specialized for life in springs (specialists) and species able to colonize all aquatic habitats (generalists). This thesis focused on communities of aquatic macroinvertebrates inhabiting the Western Carpathian spring fens. Altogether, 62 nearly pristine, treeless sites were studied, 43 environmental variables were recorded, and 361.424 specimens from 608 taxa were found and identified from 353 collected samples. The occurrence of aquatic invertebrates was predominantly driven by the local environment, regardless of taxonomic affiliation. The dispersal mode of species, however, proved to be an important indicator of differences as well as habitat specialisation. Passively dispersing organisms exhibited a significant spatial control of their communities with passive spring-fen specialists being the only group without a significant involvement of the pure environmental component. Significant spatial signal was also found for species commonly occurring at spring fens, probably due to the immigration of their individuals from surrounding habitats (mass effects). The prevailing environmental control was manifested as the effects of the flow conditions, substratum characteristics, mineral richness of water, water temperature, and climatic conditions. Moreover, the species sorting was found to differ between main mesohabitats of spring fens resulting in variation in community composition, i.e. beta diversity. It was proved that the variation was caused by different involvement of species turnover and differences in species richness in different groups of invertebrates. The systematic differences between spring-fen specialists and habitat generalists found and discussed in this thesis emphasized the necessity and suitability of functional view in treating communities in ecological studies. Not only the composition of these distinct groups was driven by different factors, but there were also differences in predictors of their species richness, species-specific responses to environment and effects of biogeographical variables. Spring-fen specialists were found to be more connected with specific conditions of sites resulting from water chemistry and temporal stability of water temperature referring to vegetation cover and peat accumulation. By contrast, generalists reflected rather flow conditions and substratum types and were also affected by biogeographical parameters of the sites.
