Accents of English: Phonaesthetic Perceptions Made by Musicians

Abstract:

Tato práce spadá do oblasti fonoestetiky a zabývá se tím, jak hudebníci a nehudebníci, čeští rodilí mluvčí, vnímají přizvuky angličtiny (v otázce hrubosti, krásy, srozumitelnosti či formality), a rovněž se zabývá otázkou, zda hudebníci rozumí mluvené angličtině lépe než nehudebníci. Teoretická část se nejprve věnuje definici pojmu přízvuk, standardizaci jazyka a přízvuku jako sociálnímu fenoménu. Dále se zaměřuje na společné vlastnosti hudby a jazyka – rytmus, výšku, délku či hlasitost. Před praktickou částí jsou popsány přízvuky angličtiny, které byly použity v nahrávkách při výzkumu. Praktická část začíná popisem cílů a metodiky. Jedná se o výzkum malého obsahu, jehož cílem je zmapování dané problematiky a toho, zda má smysl provádět hlubší výzkum na toto téma. V závěru jsou uvedeny výsledky výzkumu, který i přes jeho omezený rozsah ukázal řadu korelací a relevantních závěrů.

Abstract:

This thesis is a phonaesthetic analysis of how musicians and non-musicians, Czech native speakers, perceive accents of English (in respect of harshness, beauty, comprehension skills or formality), and also deals with whether musicians dispose of better comprehension skills of spoken English compared to non-musicians. The theoretical section is concerned with the definition of the term accent, language standardization and accents as social phenomenona. It also focuses on common features of music and language - rhythm, pitch, length or loudness. Before the practical section, the description of the accents which were used in the recordings in the research is given. The practical section starts with the targets and methodology of the research. It is a small-scale survey, whose purpose is to find out whether this field is worthy of further investigation. Finally, there are results of the research which despite its limited extent showed a large number of correlations and relevant conclusions.
