Teiresiás: knowing blidness motive in the literatury of 20th century

Abstract:

Teiresiás je mytický slepý věštec, který za svůj život překonal mnoho překážek, z nichž většina pocházela od olympských bohů. Od Dia dostal dar věštění, tedy vnitřního zraku, jeho fyzický zrak mu však byl odejmut. Teiresiás se objevuje v mnoha antických tragédiích, nejvýraznější je ovšem v Sofoklově Králi Oidipovi, kde Oidipovi sděluje zprávu o jeho vlastní duševní slepotě a stává se tak jeho protikladným dvojčetem. Tato juxtapozice obou postav dává základ pro zkoumání literárních děl vzniklých ve 20. století. Zmíněnou vědoucí slepotu chápeme jako duševní nadání, které umožňuje svému nositeli dozvědět se informace z božského zdroje za cenu ztráty fyzického zraku nebo jiného psychického nebo fyzického handicapu. Právě fenomén vnitřního zraku a určitého handicapu nalézáme v dílech Alaina Robbe-Grilleta, Philipa K. Dicka, Umberta Eca a Jacka Londona. Aby došlo k propojení i na úrovni teoretické, bereme si za příklad Platónův mýtus o jeskyni a myšlenky Carla G. Junga, oba spojuje názor, že nejvíce vidí (ví) ti, kteří nepoužívají zrak smyslový, ale zrak vnitřní.

Abstract:

Teiresias is a mythical blind seer who has overcome many obstacles in his life, the most of them come from the Olympian gods. Zeus gave him the gift of prophecy, some kind of inner sight, nevertheless his physical sight had been removed. Teiresias appears in many ancient tragedies, however the most prominent is in Sophocles King Oedipus, where he tells Oedipus about his own mental blindness and therefore becomes his opposite twin. This juxtapositions of both characters gives a basis for exploring literary works originated in the 20th century. Mentioned mental blindness could be understood as a mental gift, which allows its bearer to learn the information from the divine source at the expense of loss of physical sight or any mental or physical handicap. It is the phenomenon of inner vision that we find in works from Alan Robbe-Grillet, Philip K. Dick, Umberto Eco and Jack London. To manage the connection at the theoretical level, we take Plato's Cave myth and thoughts of Carl G. Jung, where both are linked by the idea, that these who do not use eyes but inner vision can see the best (they know the best).
