Bacterial Colonization of Polymer Surfaces and Theirs Reduction

Abstract:

Tato práce mapuje současný stav poznání problematiky bakteriálního osídlování polymer-ních povrchů a metod vedoucích k redukci tohoto negativního jevu. V teoretické části prá-ce jsou shrnuty základní informace týkající se využití polymerů ve zdravotnických aplika-cích. Na základě dostupné literatury jsou dále popsány principy vlastního bakteriálního osídlování polymerních povrchů a metod vedoucích k jeho redukci. Pozornost je také vě-nována přírodnímu antibiotiku nisinu a jeho derivátům, které mají potenciál pro využití jako antimikrobiální aditiva některých polymerů. Experimentální část je věnována přípravě a testování antibakteriálních vlastností polyvinylalkoholových filmů modifikovaných pří-rodním nisinem. Antibakteriální účinnost vzorků byla charakterizována proti Gram pozi-tivním (Staphylococcus aureus) i Gram negativním (Escherichia coli) bakteriálním kmenům. Výsledky ukazují vysokou antibakteriální účinnost proti Staphylococcus aureus, zatímco růst Escherichia coli byl ovlivněn v menším rozsahu.

Abstract:

This thesis maps the current state of the art of bacterial colonization of polymer surfaces and methods reducing the occurrence of this negative phenomenon. The theoretical part summarises basic information concerning the medical use of polymers. Principles of bacte-rial colonization of polymer surfaces and methods of their reduction are described later on based on the available literature. Attention is also paid to a naturally occurring antibiotic nisin and its derivatives that might be potentially used as antimicrobial additives of some polymers. Experimental part of this thesis is focused on preparation and testing antimicro-bial properties of polyvinyl alcohol films modified by natural nisin. Both Gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram negative (Escherichia coli) bacterial strains were uti-lized to challenge the antimicrobial efficacy of the samples. The results show a high effec-tiveness in case of Staphylococcus aureus whereas the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria was slightly influenced.
