Translators' Approach to the Text with Regard to Field Dependence and Independence Cognitive Styles

Abstract:

V posledních několika letech berou mnohé studie v oblasti výzkumu překladu v potaz osobnost, chování a duševní procesy překladatele. Na poli psychologie se k výzkumu překladu nejvíce vztahuje kognitivní psychologie, která zkoumá mentální procesy jako např. smyslové poznávání, myšlení, rozhodování a řešení problémů. Všechny tyto procesy hrají důležitou roli v překladu. Tato práce se zaměřila na jednu z teorií kognitivních stylů, závislost/nezávislost na poli, a její souvislost s překladem. Cílem této studie bylo zjistit, zda se kognitivní styl jedince jako individuální preference při získávání, zpracování a nakládání s informacemi pohybuje v rozmezí kontinua, na jehož jednom pólu se nachází závislost na poli a na druhém nezávislost na poli. Jelikož je vlastní pojetí kognitivního stylu závislosti a nezávislosti na poli značně kontroverzní, práce byla zaměřena pouze na testování výše uvedené hypotézy. Tento přístup nevyžadoval zjišťování závislosti/nezávislosti na poli u zkoumaných subjektů standardními testy. Analyzovaná data tvořily cílové texty různých žánrů přeložené studenty oboru Překladatelství anglického jazyka na Masarykově univerzitě. Byla provedena detailní analýza, při které byla vybraná překladatelská řešení vyhodnocena podle relevance vůči závislosti/nezávislosti na poli. Řešení byla rozdělena do tří kategorií: řešení, která vykazovala známky závislosti překladatele na poli, neutrální řešení a řešení, která vykazovala známky nezávislosti překladatele na poli. Dále byl určen překladatelův kognitivní styl. Výsledky potvrzují stanovenou hypotézu. Tato práce také navrhuje možné využití získaných informací při kariérní volbě překladatele a při výchově překladatelů a uvádí doporučení pro případný další výzkum v této oblasti.

Abstract:

In recent years, a growing number of works in translation studies have started to take into account the influence of the translator’s mental processes and personal traits on translation. Among other fields of psychology, cognitive psychology is of great relevance to translation research; it studies mental processes such as awareness, perception, reasoning and judgment, all of which play an important role during the translation process. This thesis set out to explore one of the approaches to cognitive styles, the theory of field-dependence/independence, in relation to translation. The aim of this study was to determine whether human cognitive styles tend to be polarized into a continuum with field-dependence on its one side and field-independence on the other. Since the underlying theory of field-dependence/independence has been strongly disputed, only this basic assumption was addressed, without testing the subjects for field-dependence/independence in the conventional way. The subjects studied were students of the English-language Translation programme at Masaryk University; data consisted of target texts of various genres translated in one of the courses. A detailed analysis was performed; selected translation solutions were assessed in terms of their relevance to the field-dependence/independence construct and classified into three categories: translation solutions exhibiting signs of field-dependence, neutral solutions and translation solutions exhibiting signs of field-independence. The overall translator’s cognitive style was determined. The tested hypothesis was confirmed. Possible applications of the findings on the translator career choice and translator training are discussed and recommendations for future research in this area are made.
