Measurement of the contact angles of wetting and surface free energy determination of plastic materials

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá literární rešerší na téma měření kontaktního úhlu smáčení a určování povrchové energie vybraných typů plastů. Studiu byly detailně podrobeny základ-ní vztahy popisující smáčení především tuhých povrchů. Byly popsány experimentální me-tody stanovení povrchové energie, průmyslové využití kontaktního úhlu smáčení i samotná metodika měření, jak přímými postupy, také nepřímými metodami. Pozornost byla rovněž věnována faktorům, které mohou dané měření ovlivnit a tím způsobit nepřesné a v celkovém kontextu nepoužitelné výsledky. V závěru teoretické části byly zmíněny zá-kladní numerické aparáty pro vyhodnocení volné povrchové energie. Experimentální část byla zaměřena na měření statických kontaktních úhlů smáčení metodou sedící kapky, vy-hodnocení pomocí CCD kamery a příslušného softwaru, pro vzorky PP, PE, PS. Měření dynamického kontaktního úhlu smáčení bylo realizováno pomocí Wilhelmyho destičkové metody. Výsledky měření a možné chyby měření byly diskutovány a zahrnuty do závěru.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with a literature review concerning contact angles measurements and a surface free energy determination of specific types of plastic materials. The basic relations of wetting, especially solids, are discussed in detail. Experimental methods of surface en-ergy determination, application of contact angle measurements in industry and methods of measurements, both by direct and indirect methods are provided in the text. The attention was also given to factors which may affect the measurement and lead to erroneous and inaccurate results. At the end of the theoretical part, the basic mathematical means of free surface energy evaluation are mentioned. The empirical part of the thesis is concerned with static angle measurements of PP, PE and PS samples by means of an equilibrium sessile drop method, evaluated by CCD camera and appropriate software. The dynamic contact angle measurements using Wilhelmy plate method were performed. Results of measure-ments and potential errors are discussed in conclusions as well.
