Stoicism in Seneca's tragedies Medea and Hercules Furens

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to bridge over the conflict between the two faces of one person – Seneca the philosopher and Seneca the playwright. After the analysis of the stoic view on the role of literature and the comparison of Seneca´s tragedies with their Greek antecedents, the author analyzes various aspects of stoic philosophy and its use in tragedies Medea and Hercules Furens. She focuses mainly on the theory of wise man and the way to virtue, stoic ability to cope with fate (death), the disastrous effect of uncontroled emotions, and at last, stoic views on the cosmos, the role of man in it and their realisation in the dramatic performance. The main goal of this work is to point out that there exists mutual relationship between stoic ideas and Seneca´s tragedies. They serve as propaganda of the stoic philosophy, which in this way reaches wider audiences – their didactic dimension therefore cannot be denied.

Abstract:

Cieľom práce je preklenúť zdanlivý konflikt medzi dvomi stránkami tej istej osobnosti - Senecy filozofa a dramatika. Autorka po úvodnej analýze stoického pohľadu na úlohu literatúry a porovnaní Senecových tragédií s ich gréckymi predlohami, analyzuje rôzne aspekty stoického učenia a ich aplikáciu v tragédiách Medea a Hercules Furens. Zameriava sa najmä na teóriu mudrca a cestu k cnosti, stoické vyrovnanie sa s osudom (smrťou), zhubný vplyv nezvládaných emócií a nakoniec pohľady stoikov na kozmos, úlohu človeka v ňom a ich realizáciu v dramatickom prevedení. Hlavnou úlohou práce je poukázať na vzájomnú prepojenosť stoických myšlienok a Senecových tragédií. Tie slúžia ako propagácia stoického učenia, ktoré sa tak dostáva k širšiemu publiku – nedá sa im teda uprieť didaktický rozmer.
