The origin of dog-breed names in the Czech language

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce pojednává o názvech psích plemen v češtině. V úvodní kapitole je nastíněna historie psů, další oddíl je věnován různým kritériím rozdělení plemen psů a především nové nomenklatuře skupin plemen psů, jejíž jednotlivé skupiny jsou stručně charakterizovány. Další část je věnována objasnění původu slov pes, fena a štěně. V hlavní části práce je představeno deset názvů psích plemen (či skupin plemen psů). Každé plemeno je uvedeno ve spisovné české podobě, následuje výčet jednotlivých plemen a charakteristika skupiny obecně. Rovněž je nastíněn historický vývoj názvů těchto psích plemen a etymologický výklad slova. Uvedeny jsou také slangové varianty jednotlivých plemen, pokud byly zaznamenány. Další část nastiňuje motivaci vzniku názvů psích plemen, v závěru práce je poté podle motivace vzniku jejich pojmenování sestavena nová nomenklatura plemen psů.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with dog-breed names in the Czech language. In introduction there is an outline of the history of dogs, the next section is about various criteria in breeds division and especially about new nomenclature of dog-breed groups, the individual groups are briefly described. After that the thesis deals with the development and the origin of words dog – both male and female – and puppy. In the main part there is introduced ten dog-breed names (or groups of breeds). Each of breed is introduced in the Czech language and it is followed by a list of various dogs of each type and the brief description of the group in general. The thesis also outlines the historical development of these dog-breed names and etymological interpretation of the word. There are also listed a slangy variants of individual breeds, if they were recorded. Another section deals with the motivation of the origin of dog-breed names. In conclusion there is outlined new nomenclature of dog breeds by the motivation of their names.
