The Walkman Effect: Private Listening Culture and its Impact on the Individual and the Society

Abstract:

Práce se zábýva fenoménem takzvaného Walkman Efektu, který započal úvodem přenosných zařízení k poslechu hudby, a zkoumá jaký toto mělo vliv na kulturu. Zjišťuje, jakým způsobem se podařilo přetvořit kulturu poslechu ze sdílené na osobní a jakým způsobem rozostření těchto hranic ovlivnilo jednotlivce a společnost. Nejprve je prozkoumána ranná historie zvuku a některé klíčové pokroky s ohledem na osobní poslech. Dále se práce zabývá zařízením Walkman a začátkem osobně-veřejného poslechu. Vysvětluje koncepty jako jakým způsobem bylo zařízení navrženo s myšlenkou jednotlivce na prvním místě, kterak může být konzumace hudby kreativní a jaké následky měla náhrada zvuků velkoměsta vlastním, osobním soundtrackem. Dále se práce zabývá aspekty osobního poslechu, které mají potenciálně negativní vliv na posluchače. Tyto zahrnují výzkum problému hlasitosti s možnostmi řešení a dále jakým způsobem může mít volba hudby vliv na naši osobnost a chování. Na závěr práce shrnuje všechny koncepty jimiž se zabývala a bilancuje celkovou důležitost vývoje osobního poslechu.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the phenomenon of the Walkman Effect; the introduction of playback music devices and their effect on culture. It explores how they reimagined the culture of listening into a private one and what effect this blurring of boundaries had on the society. This work starts by examining the early history of sound and some of the key developments with regards to the private listening culture. Then it continues to look at the Walkman as the beginning of the privately public listening experience. It explains such concepts as how the device was designed with the individual in mind, how consumption can be creative and how replacing the sounds of urban life with a customized soundtrack had a dramatic effect on the society. It also looks into aspects of private listening that are potentially detrimental to the listener such as the problem of loudness and how it can be controlled as well as how the choice of music potentially reflects their personality and behavior. The thesis then concludes with a general overview of all aspects and considers the significance of the progress in private listening.
