Sociocultural factors influencing school achievement

Abstract:

Téma diplomové práce s názvem Sociokulturní faktory ovlivňující úspěšnost vzdělávací dráhy bylo vybráno na základě mého zájmu o danou problematiku, která se mě týká nejen v rovině společenské, ale také v rovině osobní. V teoretické části se diplomová práce zabývá faktory, které ovlivňují úspěšnost vzdělávání romských žáků a studentů se socioekonomicky nižším statutem. Práce je dále zaměřena na vliv společnosti a na změny, které předcházely vzniku sociálně vyloučených lokalit v České republice. Je zde zmíněna rodina, její specifické znaky, funkce a vliv rodin na úspěšnost ve vzdělávání jedince. V závěru této části se práce zabývá odlišnostmi tradiční romské rodiny od rodin majoritní společnosti. Empirická část je založena na výzkumu, jenž byl proveden na základě vyhodnocení rozhovorů autorky této práce s osobami ze sociálně-ekonomicky znevýhodněného prostředí. Výzkumem bylo zjištěno, že na úspěšnost či neúspěšnost vzdělávací dráhy u osob se sociokulturním zázemím odlišným od mainstreamové společnosti má vliv několik faktorů, a to rodina, prostředí a v neposlední řadě vůle respondenta dosáhnout určité úrovně vzdělání.

Abstract:

The theme of the diploma thesis with the title ``Sociocultural Elements Influencing the Success of Education Paths'q has been selected on the basis of my interest in the field, which concerns me not only socially, but also personally. In the theoretical part, the thesis deals with elements influencing the success of educating Roma pupils and students, who come from a weaker socio-economic background. The thesis then focuses on the influence of the society and the particular social changes, which gave rise to the socially excluded localities in the Czech Republic. Further, the thesis points out the concept of family, as well as its specific features and its influence on the success of educating individuals. Attention has been then paid to the distinction between the traditional Roma family and a family from the majority society. The analytical part of this thesis has been based upon a research carried out on the basis of the evaluation of interviews of the author with individuals from a weaker socio-economic background. The results of the research confirmed, that the success of the education paths of individuals from a sociocultural backround different from that of the majority society is influenced by several elements. These elements are represented by the family, the social environment the individual lives in and his/her will to achieve a certain level of education.
