The Concept of Art in Plato's and Aristotle's Philosophy

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zaměří na rozdílnost pojetí umění u Platóna a Aristotela. Představí teorii mimésis u obou filosofů a následně obě pojetí srovná a popíše, v čem se shodují a v čem jsou rozdílná. Práce bude vycházet ze základních primárních děl a relevantních pasáží, které budou představeny, a to včetně stručného výkladů základních pojmů. V práci se pokusím nejen o představení a srovnání dvou základních koncepcí teorie mimésis, ale i o jejich zhodnocení, resp. vřazení a teoretického využití v rámci novějších teorií zabývajících se souvislostí umění a poznání pro které se užívá název estetický kognitivismus.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to compare different approaches to art by Plato and Aristotle. The thesis will introduce, describe, and compare the approach to the theory of mimesis of both philosophers pointing out the similarities and differences. It will be based on Plato's and Aristotle works and relevant passages, which will be introduced along with brief interpretation of basic concepts. I will not only be attempting to introduce and compare the two basic conceptions of theory of mimesis, but I will also attempt to evaluate them and present their theoretical usage within the scope of new theories concerning the connection between art and knowledge, which are called aesthetic cognitivism.
