Psychological stress and burnout among nurses in pediatric wards

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem práce bylo zjistit výskyt a míru psychické zátěže a syndromu vyhoření v závislosti na typu pracoviště sester dětských oddělení. Tento výzkum se pokusil dále odhalit vztahy mezi mírou psychické zátěže a typem pracoviště sester (standardní oddělení a oddělení intenzivní péče), mírou syndromu vyhoření a typem pracoviště sester (standardní oddělení a oddělení intenzivní péče), zjistit závislost mezi mírou syndromu vyhoření a sociodemografickými faktory (věk, délka praxe, stupeň vzdělání) a závislost mezi mírou psychické zátěže a syndromem vyhoření. Metodika: Do souboru bylo zařazeno 130 všeobecných a dětských sester pracujících na dětských odděleních ve vybraných nemocnicích Moravskoslezského kraje, které splňovaly předem stanovené zařazující kritéria. Ke sběru dat byla použita kvantitativní metoda pomocí dvou standardizovaných dotazníků doplněných o demografické údaje sester. Psychická zátěž sester byla měřena pomocí Meisterova dotazníku a ke zjištění syndromu vyhoření sester byl použit standardizovaný dotazník MBI (Maslach Burnout Inventory). Dotazníkové šetření probíhalo v období od 1. 11. 2017 do 30. 11. 2017. Výsledky: Šetřením nebyl zjištěn rozdíl ve vnímání psychické zátěže a syndromu vyhoření mezi jednotlivými pracovišti dětských oddělení. Nebyla rovněž prokázána souvislost mezi demografickými faktory (věk, délka praxe, stupeň vzdělání) a pocitem vyhoření. Výzkum potvrdil, že se zvyšující se pracovní zátěží roste i míra emocionálního vyčerpání a depersonalizace a současně dochází k poklesu osobního uspokojení z práce. Přetížení ani syndrom vyhoření na jednotlivých odděleních nebyl prokázán. Negativně však sestry vnímají časovou tíseň, vysokou odpovědnost, dlouhodobou únosnost. Dále pak nejčastěji uváděly nedostatek sil na konci pracovního dne, namáhavost při celodenní práci s lidmi, nezájem o klienty, nedostatek energie a nedostatek svěžesti při práci se svými klienty. Závěr: Pracovní zátěž a syndrom vyhoření spolu úzce souvisí, proto je důležité věnovat pozornost jejich prevenci.

Abstract:

Aim: The object of this thesis has been to find out the occurrence and the degree of mental strain and the burnout syndrome in connection with the type of working environment for nurses in pediatric wards. This research has tried to reveal the relationship between the degree of mental strain and the type of working environment for nurses (standard wards and intensive care), the degree of burnout syndrome and the type of working environment for nurses (standard wards and intensive care) and to find out the relation between the degree of burnout syndrome and sociodemographic factors (age, length of experience, education degree) and the relation between the degree of mental strain and burnout syndrome. Methodology: 130 ward nurses and pediatric nurses working in Childrens Units in chosen hospitals of the Moravskoslezský region were included. These hospitals fulfilled given criteria. Quantitative method was used in order to collect data, with the help of standardized questionnaires which were supplied with demographic facts of nurses. The mental strain of nurses was measured with the help of Meister questionnaire and in order to find out the burnout syndrome of nurses, standardized MBI (Maslach Burnout Inventory) questionnaire was used. The questionnaire period took place from 1st November, 2017 to 30th November, 2017. Result: During the investigation no difference between the perception of physical strain and burnout syndrome of nurses working on the above mentioned wards has been detected. In addition, no connection between demographic factors (age, length of experience, education degree) and burnout syndrome has been proved. The research has confirmed that with the increasing work load, the rate of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization are growing and at the same time the occurrence of satisfaction from work is decreasing. Neither overload nor burnout syndrome has been proved on the above mention wards. Nurses perceive time pressure, high responsibility and long-term endurance in a negative way. In addition, they have mentioned the lack of strength at the end of the day, struggle during daylong work with people, loss of interest in clients, lack of energy and lack of freshness when working with clients. Conclusion: Work load and burnout syndrome are closely related, therefore, it is important to pay attention in order to prevent them.
