"Vitruvius Moravicus" Palladian inspirations in the service of Moravian lay nobility

Abstract:

V moravské architektuře začátku 19. století je možné sledovat výraznou stylovou pluralitu. Ze starších tradic vycházel styl frozen baroque, od konce 18. století se součástí moravské architektury stal styl pitoresque, využívaný hlavně v zahradní architektuře a významný vliv zde mělo i dílo velkých architektů Charlese Moreau a Karla Friedricha Schinkela. Na rozdíl od českého prostředí, umělecky orientovaného na saské prostředí, kde se prosadily formy anglického neopalladianismu, byla Morava zasažena spíše francouzskou revoluční architekturou. Navzdory tomu se i zde v zámecké architektuře objevují zvláštní palladiánské formy, navazující spíše na italsko - francouzské tradice. Ty jsou poprvé patrné v díle Isidora Canevaleho. Vyznačují se jednoduchým pravidelným půdorysem, podobným nenáročným, ale elegantním rozvržením fasád a zapojením architektury do okolního anglického parku. Stylově podobné stavby, které si na Moravě stavěla poměrně uzavřená skupina aristokratů (Liechtensteinové, Haugwitzové, rytíř Herring) se prosadily jako voluptuáry (venkovské vily v blízkosti města, nebo hlavní rezidence), například v Adamově, nebo Jinošově později také jako villegiatury (hlavní sídlo panství) v Habrovanech. Formy palladianismu se prostřednictvím příkladů a architektonických vzorníků dostaly i do průměrné architektonické stavební produkce (Lysice). Anglický neopalladianismus se v moravském prostředí uplatnil pouze na několika stavbách knížat z Liechtensteinu (zámek Pohansko) a v interiérech (Lednice). Moravské zámecké interiéry ovlivnil i pozdejší anglický styl regency (schodiště v Boskovicích, knihovní sál v Rájci nad Svitavou). Moravské palladiánské zámky projektovali významní rakouští architekti jako Josef Hardmuth, Josef Kornhäusel, či mladý Ludwig Förster.

Abstract:

Moravian architecture of the beginning of the nineteenth century can be seen as containing a visible plurality of style. Frozen Baroque style draws on the previous tradition, the end of the eighteenth century saw the appearance of the Pitoresque style (used chiefly in the garden architecture) and a significant current of influence can be traced back also to the work of two great architects – Charles Moreau and Karl Friedrich Schinkel. In contrast to the development in Bohemia, artistically inclining to Saxon contexts where the forms of English neo-Palladian style found their shape, Moravia was more under influence of the architecture of French Revolution classicism. In spite of that, some particular Palladian forms in chateâu architecture based more on the Franco-Italian tradition can be found here as well. They can be first recognized in the work of Isidoro Canevale. Their characteristic features include a simple ground plan, similiarly understood yet elegant array of facâdes, and the inclusion of architecture in the surrounding park in the English style. Stylistically similar buildings, built in Moravia by a relatively closed circle of nobility (Liechtenstein, Haugwitz, Knight Herring), were utilized as voluptuaries (country villas in the vicinity of a town or a main residence), e.g. in Adamov or Jinošov, later also as villegiatures (the main residences of a dominion), e.g. in Habrovany. The forms of Palladian style were transfered via various examples and architectural pattern books also to the average architectural production, e.g. Lysice. The English neo-Palladian style found its expression in the Moravian context only in case of a few buildings (the chateâu in Pohansko) and interiors (the chateâu in Lednice) of the princes of Liechtenstein. Moravian chateau interiors were also influenced by the English Regency style (the staircase in Boskovice, the library in Rájec nad Svitavou). Moravian Palladian chateâus were designed by the well-known Austrian architects, such as Josef Hardmuth, Josef Kornhäusel, or the young Ludwig Förster.
