Optimization of practical training in plant anatomy at Faculty of Science, Masaryk University

Abstract:

Anatomie rostlin je jedním ze základních oborů vyučovaných v biologických studijních programech na českých i zahraničních univerzitách. Forma výuky praktických cvičení tohoto kurzu je, jak vyplynulo z rozboru internetových zdrojů a také z dotazníkové části této práce, velmi různorodá. Cílem této diplomové práce bylo nastínit možný způsob optimalizace praktické výuky rostlinné anatomie na Přírodovědecké fakultě Masarykovy univerzity, včetně její modernizace využitím digitálních zobrazovacích a záznamových možností. Teoretická část této práce je zaměřena na rozbor vybraných kapitol z rostlinné anatomie, konkrétně na unifaciální a bifaciální listy krytosemenných rostlin, endodermis ve stoncích a amfikribrální cévními svazky. V praktické části diplomové práce jsem se kromě již zmíněným dotazníkům věnovala zejména výběru vhodných objektů pro praktickou výuku rostlinné anatomie, které by měly vést ke zkvalitnění výuky. Zpracované objekty byly pomocí koeficientu vhodnosti použití pro praktickou výuku roztříděny do 3 kategorií. Přestože nejvyšší požadavky na vhodnost použití splnila většina zpracovaných rostlinných objektů (41 z 65), prioritně pro zařazení do výuky na PřF MU navrhuji stonky hluchavky bílé (Lamium album), řeřišnice luční (Cardamine pratensis), monstery (Monstera adansonii), svízele povázky (Galium mollugo) a svízele přítuly (Galium aparine), oddenek a řapík papratky samičí (Athyrium filix-femina), list narcisu kantábrijského (Narcissus cantabricus) a list modřence arménského (Muscari armeniacum). Důrazně pak doporučuji zařadit do výuky rovněž studium stavby generativních orgánů, které na rozdíl od ostatních českých univerzit na PřF MU v sylabech není. Navrhuji rovněž modernizovat výuku praktických cvičení využitím live-systému a zhotovováním mikrofotografií, na jejichž základě by studenti vypracovali svůj protokol z náročnějších, zejména organologických cvičení. Věřím, že uplatnění mých návrhů ve výuce by vedlo k jejímu zatraktivnění pro studenty.

Abstract:

Plant anatomy is one of the major courses taught in biological study programs at both Czech and foreign universities. As it is obvious from corresponding internet sources and filled questionnaires included in the thesis, the form of plant anatomy practical courses varies greatly. The main goal of the thesis was to define a possible way of optimization of plant anatomy practical course at Faculty of Science, Masaryk University, including its modernization using digital microphoto image capture and presentation. The theoretical part of the thesis is focused on some topics in plant anatomy, specifically on the unifacial and bifacial leaves of angiosperms plants, the endodermis in stems, and the amphicribal vascular bundles. In the practical part of the thesis I dealt with questionnaires already mentioned, but mainly with seeking of suitable plant objects previously neglected in order to enhance the quality of the course. The used objects were classified into three categories according to how these objects are suitable for usage in the practical course. Although most of the objects (41 from 65) were placed in the best graded category, I preferentially suggest the stems of white nettle (Lamium album), cuckooflower (Cardamine pratensis), monstera (Monstera adansonii), hedge bedstraw (Galium mollugo), and cleavers (Galium aparine), the rhizome and the petiole of lady fern (Athyrium filix-femina), the leaf of daffodil (Narcissus cantabricus) and grape hyacinth (Muscari armeniacum) for introduction to the practical training of plant anatomy at the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University. I also suggest including the topic of generative organs anatomy, which in contrast to the other Czech universities is not in the syllabus of the practical course at Masaryk University. I also suggest modernization of the practical training using a live-system and capturing microphotographs, which can be used by students for making their protocols from more difficult topics like organology. I hope that my suggestions would lead to more attractiveness of the practical course for the students.
