Anotace:

Tato diplomová práce zkoumá pojetí etiky v díle J. M. Coetzeeho, zejména její vztah k moci, psaní, zvířatům a ideálu. Opírá se o teoreticky vedenou literární analýzu, která spojuje textovou interpretaci románů Dusklands, Waiting for the Barbarians, Life and Times of Michael K., Foe, The Lives of Animals, Disgrace a The Childhood of Jesus s různými filozofickými přístupy k etice a moci, především z perspektivy Levinasovy filozofie Druhého. Cílem práce je identifikovat klíčové tematické a formální aspekty Coetzeeho etiky a prozkoumat, jak se v průběhu jeho tvorby vyvíjejí – a tím poskytnout teoretický rámec pro četbu jeho díla jako etické kritiky a subverze moci.

Abstract:

This master’s thesis investigates J. M. Coetzee’s treatment of ethics in his works, examining its relationship with power, writing, animals, and the ideal. It applies the theory-driven literary analysis, combining the textual analysis of Dusklands, Waiting for the Barbarians, Life and Times of Michael K., Foe, The Lives of Animals, Disgrace, and The Childhood of Jesus with various philosophical approaches of ethics and power, primarily drawn from Levinas’s philosophy of the Other. It aims to identify the key thematic and formal aspects of Coetzee’s ethics and explore how they evolve throughout his career, serving as a theoretical framework for reading his works as an ethical critique and subversion of power.
