Reflecting the American Landscape and Interrogating Tourism in the memoirs of Todd Parnell and Paul Schullery

Anotace:

Tématem této diplomové práce je zobrazení krajiny a vztah literatury a turismu ve dvou dílech současné americké environmnetální literatury - The Buffalo, Ben, and Me (Buffalo, Ben a já) Todda Parnella a Mountain Time: A Yellowstone Memoir (Čas hor: Vzpomínky na Yellowstone) Paula Schulleryho. Práce se zaměřuje v první řadě na to, jak autoři zachycují krajinu a přírodu v místech, která jsou úzce spjata s jejich životy. Ve svých vzpomínkových knihách se však také věnují problematice cestovního ruchu, který neodvratně patří ke scenérii. Ačkoliv autoři přistupují k turistice poměrně kriticky, způsob, jakým popisují přírodní krásy Yellowstonu a řeky Buffalo, turisty spíše přiláká. Lze však soudit, že návštěvníci inspirovaní četbou těchto knih budou více vnímaví k životnímu prostředí a přírodním jevům.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the representation of landscape and the relationship between literature and tourism in two recent works of American environmental literature - Todd Parnell's The Buffalo, Ben, and Me and Paul Schullery's Mountain Time: A Yellowstone Memoir. The thesis focuses primarily on the way how the authors represent the landscape and nature of the places that have a special personal meaning to them. But they also deal with the issue of tourism in their memoirs, since it is an inavoidable part of the scenery. Although they are rather critical of tourism, the way they describe the natural beauties of Yellowstone and the Buffalo river is very likely to actually attract tourists. However, it can be presumed, that the visitors inspired by these books will also be more perceptive to the environment and the natural features.
