The processual passive in German and Czech journalism

Abstract:

This master's thesis deals with the processual passive in German and Czech journalism. The aim of the study is to analyse the implementation of the German processual passive in equivalent Czech translations by means of contrastive corpus analysis. The theoretical part of the thesis summarises basic findings in the areas of the processual passive and its alternative forms in German and Czech, the functional style of press language and corpus analysis. In the practical part of the thesis, a corpus analysis is carried out in the parallel corpus InterCorp and it is evaluated whether passive constructions in the German text are expressed passively, actively or by other passive paraphrases in the Czech text. The influence of the occurrence of an agent phrase is also taken into account. The results of the corpus analysis show that the German processual passive is mostly expressed by active phrases in Czech. However, the participial passive equivalent of the German processual passive is also frequently used. Furthermore, there are formulations in the reflexive passive with attributes or nouns. It was found that the existence of an agent phrase in German favours the use of the active in Czech.

Předložená diplomová práce se zabývá dějovým pasivem v německých a českých publicistických textech. Cílem práce je analyzovat realizaci německého dějového pasiva v ekvivalentních českých překladech pomocí kontrastivní korpusové analýzy. Teoretická část práce shrnuje základní poznatky o dějovém pasivu a jeho alternativních formách v němčině a češtině, o funkčním stylu médií a o korpusové analýze. Praktickou část práce představuje korpusová analýza s využitím paralelního korpusu InterCorp, která si klade za cíl zjistit, zda jsou pasivní konstrukce ve výchozím německém textu vyjádřeny v českém textu pasivně, aktivně nebo jinými parafrázemi trpného rodu. Zohledněn byl také vliv výskytu agentu ve výchozím textu. Výsledky korpusové analýzy ukazují, že německé dějové pasivum je v češtině většinou vyjádřeno aktivem. Často se však také vyskytuje participiální pasivum, které se dá považovat za ekvivalent německého dějového pasiva. Ve zkoumaném korpusu se dále nachází zvratné pasivum a formulace s atributy nebo podstatnými jmény. Korpusová analýza prokázala, že pokud je v němčině vyjádřen agent, v češtině se upřednostňuje užití aktiva.
