From Margaret Thatcher to John Major – Transition of the British Attitude Towards European Integration

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá evropskou politikou Margaret Thatcherové a Johna Majora. Cílem práce je porovnat postoje těchto dvou politiků ve vztahu k Evropskému společenství, potažmo Evropské unii. První kapitola vysvětluje hlavní paradigmata evropského integračního procesu. Následně je blíže popsána britská představa směřování evropské integrace. Druhá kapitola se zabývá dějinami evropské integrace od druhé světové války do roku 1975. V jádru práce je analyzována evropská politika Margaret Thatcherové. Speciální pozornost je věnována britskému rabatu a projevu v Bruggách. Čtvrtá kapitola se zabývá evropskou politikou Johna Majora, především pak jeho postojem k Maastrichtské smlouvě a ERM. Poslední kapitola obsahuje komparaci politiky Margaret Thatcherové a Johna Majora ve vztahu k evropské integraci.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the European policy of Margaret Thatcher and John Major. The aim of the thesis is to compare the attitute of Margaret Thatcher and John Major towards European integration. In the first chapter are explained the main paradigms of European integration and the British vision of the European integration process. The second chapter characterizes the history of European integration from the Second World War until 1975. In the third chapter is analysed the European policy of Margaret Thatcher - especially the British rebate and the Bruges speech. The fourth chapter deals with the European policy of John Major, mainly with his attitude towards the Maastricht Treaty and the ERM. In the last chapter is compared the approach of Margaret Thatcher to the European Community with the John Major´s approach to the European Union.
