Management models and their specifics in public art galleries in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je zjistit, jaké manažerské modely jsou uplatňovány ve veřejných muzeích umění v České republice a jaká mají specifika s ohledem na velikost institucí. Teoretická část se nejdříve zaměřuje na změnu paradigmatu v managementu, popisuje vývoj jednotlivých manažerských funkcí a přináší koncept manažerských modelů od Juliana Birkinshawa. Poté jsou v práci pomocí rešerše odborné literatury popsána specifika arts managementu. Dále se definují odlišnosti managmentu v muzeích umění v podmínkách českého prostředí a shromažďují se teoretické poznatky pro účely kvalitativního výzkumu zaměřeného na odhalení dalších specifik arts managementu v galeriích. Na základě výsledků z rozhovorů v rámci dílčího kvalitativního výzkumu a literární rešerše z teoretické části je navržen strukturovaný dotazník, jenž je použit pro následný kvantitativní výzkum. Cílem dotazníkového šetření je nalezení odpovědi na výzkumnou otázku. Výzkumný vzorek je tvořen souborem všech státních příspěvkových organizací fungující jako muzea umění na území ČR, a to v celkovém počtu 37 institucí. Výsledky tohoto výzkumu jsou shrnuty v kapitole Diskuse praktické části práce. Tato diplomová práce je první aplikací teorie Birkinshawa v prostředí českých kulturních subjektů. Výzkum by měl nejen zmapovat toto kreativní odvětví, ale i položit začátek pro další zkoumání manažerských modelů v kultuře za účelem nalezení těch nejlepších praktik a principů.

Abstract:

This master’s thesis aims to find out which management models are applied in public art galleries in the Czech Republic and what are their specifics with regard to the size. At first, the theoretical part is focusing on the paradigm shift in management, describes the development of individual managerial functions and introduces the concept of management models by Julian Birkinshaw. Then the specifics of arts management are described based on the analysis of the academic texts. Furthermore, the differences of management in art galleries are described in terms of the Czech environment and theoretical knowledge is collected for the purposes of qualitative research aimed at revealing other specifics of arts management in galleries. Based on the results of interviews within the partial qualitative research and literature search from the theoretical part, a structured questionnaire is designed, which is used for subsequent quantitative research. The aim of the survey is to find the answer to the research question. The research sample consists of a set of all state-subsidized organizations operating as art galleries in the Czech Republic, in a total of 37 institutions. The results of this research are summarized in the chapter Discussion of the practical part. This master’s thesis is the first application of Birkinshaw’s theory in Czech cultural organizations. This research should not only map this creative industry, but also lay the groundwork for further exploration of management models in culture in order to collect best practices and principles.
