Violence in New Religious Movements: Heaven's Gate

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce je zaměřena především na nové náboženské hnutí Nebeská brána a na násilí, k němuž uvnitř hnutí došlo. První část práce se věnuje vymezení dvou základních termínů: nová náboženská hnutí a UFO kulty. Následně se soustředí na podrobnější vhled do historie Nebeské brány. Druhá část práce se zabývá různými typy násilí, které se u nových náboženských hnutí mohou vyskytnout, a také faktory, které mohou k násilí u takových hnutí přispět. Na závěr se pak práce věnuje samotné hromadné sebevraždě u Nebeské brány.

Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis focuses primarily on the new religious movement Heaven's Gate and the violence that has occurred within the movement. The first part of the thesis deals with defining two basic terms: new religious movements and UFO cults. Then it focuses on a more detailed insight into the history of Heaven's Gate. The second part of the thesis examines the different types of violence that can occur in new religious movements, as well as the factors that can contribute to violence in such movements. Finally, the thesis focuses on the mass suicide at Heaven's Gate itself.
