The phenomenon of Gilbert&Sullivan - birth of the English operetta

Abstract:

W. S. Gilbert a Arthur Sullivan,zakladatelé a nejznámější představitelé anglické operety, patří zároveň k nejvýraznějším osobnostem hudebně-zábavného divadla 19. století. Anglická opereta, jejíž jsou neodmyslitelnou součástí, se vyvíjí soubžně s kontinentální operetou evropskou, avšak vykazuje jistá specifika, které ji přibližují mnohem více než k operetnímu žánru, tak jak jej prezentují jejich kolegové v Paříži i ve Vídni, k pozdjším hudebním komediím a muzikálům, které by se bez jejich vlivu pravdpodobně ubíraly jinou cestou. Na území Velké Británie a Spojených států se totiž jejich působení ukázalo jako zcela zásadní pro vznik nového žánru. Celá řada muzikálových autorů přiznává ovlivnění Gilbertovými vtipnými a inteligentními texty s typickým humorem zvaným 'topsy-turvy', které nejsou u operety obvyklé, stejně jako v té dob ojedinělou integrací libreta, zpěvních textů a hudby, kterou dosáhli také díky Sullivanovu smyslu pro divadelní situaci. Směr moderního hudebního divadla 20. století předznamenali Gilbert a Sullivan především pokusem o integraci, kterou pak naplno dokončili Rodgers a Hammerstein ml. počínaje Oklahomou (1943), která znamenala zlom v dějinách muzikálu. Jejich inovace však spočívala také ve výrazném rozšíení úlohy sboru, v důrazu na scénografii a spektakulárnost, jímž předznamenali pozdější westendové a broadwayské produkce. Během 25 let vzájemné spolupráce napsali celkem 14 operet, jejichž rozbor je součástí třetí části práce.

Abstract:

Brilliant librettist W. S. Gilbert (1836-1911) and splendid composer Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900), two representatives of the Victorian age, are the founders and the main representatives of the English operetta. They collaborated on a series of fourteen operettas during 25 years (1871-1896). At the beginning they were influenced by Jacques Offenbach, the father of the operetta, especially by his Orphée aux Enferns. Later they created their own style. Their operettas are not stupid as some of the continental's works; they are intelligent, but not intelectual, they have a lot of wit and charm. Seven of them Gilbert situated to present. The 'Savoy Operas', as they are mostly called, have enjoyed broad and enduring international success, particularly in the English-speaking world, perhaps because of their combination of engaging melodies, witty lyrics and gentle satire. Gilbert invented his specific world of 'topsy-turvy' and created his humor called 'Topsy-turvydom', when nothing is like in the real life. He is often compared to G.B.Shaw because of his humourous world of paradox and to Aristophanes, because their world in one not of nonsense, but of sense upside down. Arthur Sullivan, the favourite composer of the Queen Victoria, was the most completely national composer that England had produced since Henry Purcell. Together they created the unique combination which will become the world's phenomenon. We can find two branches in their work comic (Thespis, Trial by Jury, H.M.S.Punafore, The Pirates of Penzance, Patience, The Mikado, The Gondoliers) and serious (The Sorcerer, Iolanthe, Princess Ida, Ruddigore, The Yeomen of the Guard). The final operettas Utopia Limited and The Grand Duke are an epilogue of their collaboration.
