Static allometry of human teeth and mandible in the contemporary Czech population: a study using CT medical data

Abstract:

The objective of this diploma thesis was to examine the allometry of teeth and lower jaw in the current Czech population. In the theoretical part of this work was created a brief overview of previous knowledge about the relationship of tooth size to the size of the lower jaw. Based on this knowledge, a pilot sample of virtual models of the canine teeth and lower jaw obtained from CT scans of the facial part of the skull was examined. Height was measured on three-dimensional models of the canine teeth, landmarks were digitized on the models of the lower jaw and linear dimensions were obtained from them. The relationship between tooth size and lower jaw was examined by correlation analy-sis of tooth heights, linear dimensions, and centroid sizes of selected lower jaw areas. Lower jaw allometry was analysed by multiple linear regression of Procrustes shape coordinates to centroid size. In each of these analyses sex differences were assessed. All observed dimensions and centroid sizes of selected lower jaw areas showed statistically sig-nificant sex differences. Significant positive linear relationship was found only in women between left tooth height and symphysis height. There were also significant sex differences in the average Procrustes shapes of the lower jaw. Regression analysis showed a certain trend of continuation of allometric change in the shape of the female mandible in men.

Abstract:

Předmětem předkládané práce bylo prozkoumat alometrii zubů a dolní čelisti u současné české populace. V teoretické části práce byl vytvořen stručný přehled dosavadních poznatků o vztahu velikosti zubů k velikosti dolní čelisti. Na základě těchto znalostí byl přezkoumán pilotní vzorek virtuálních modelů špičáků a dolní čelisti získaných z CT záznamů obličejové části lebky. Na trojrozměrných modelech špičáků byla naměřena výška, na modelech dolní čelisti byly nadigitalizované význačné body a z nich získané lineární rozměry. Vztah velikosti zubů a dolní čelisti byl prozkoumán pomocí korelační analýzy výšek zubů, lineárních rozměrů a centroidových velikostí konfigurací bodů vybraných oblastí dolní čelisti. Alometrie dolní čelisti byla analyzována pomocí vícenásobní lineární regrese prokrůstovych tvarových koordinát na centroidovou velikost. Při každé z těchto analýz byly pozorovány pohlavní rozdíly. Všechny sledované rozměry a centroidové velikosti vybraných oblastí dolní čelisti prokázaly statisticky významné pohlavní rozdíly. Korelační analýza prokázala významnou lineární závislost pouze v případě žen u výšky levého zubu a výšky symfýzy. Také se ukázaly významné pohlavní rozdíly v průměrných prokrůstovych tvarech dolní čelisti. Regresní analýza poukázala na jistý trend pokračování alometrické změny tvaru ženské dolní čelisti u mužů.
