Motifs of Traditional West African Religiosity in the Religious Life of the Moroccan Gnawa Community

Abstract:

Práce nastiňuje možnosti komparace náboženského života a představ marocké komunity gnawa s tradičními západoafrickými náboženstvími. Její jádro tvoři rozbor gnawíjského rituálu líla a původních náboženských tradic západní Afriky, které jsou pro účely práce schematizovány. Prostřednictvím komparativní analýzy jsou v práci předloženy společné religiózní motivy, které nelze přímo slučovat s islámskou věroukou ani s muslimským prostředím Maroka, ve kterém gnawa působí. Získané poznatky proto podporují hypotézu o západoafrickém původu religiozity gnawy a jejím postupné adaptaci v majoritním prostředí. Dále také ukazují, jak komunita ke své tradici v rámci islámského i komerčního diskurzu přistupuje a modifikuje ji.

Abstract:

This thesis adumbrates the possibilities of comparing the religious life and ideas of the Moroccan Gnawa community with traditional West African religions. Its core is an analysis of the Gnawi lila ritual and the original religious traditions od West Africa which are schematized for purposes of this thesis. Through comparative analysis, the thesis presents common religious motives that cannot be directly included with Islamic faith or with Muslim environment of Morocco, in which Gnawa operates. The acquired knowledge therefore supports the hypothesis of the West African origin of Gnawa religiosity and its gradual adaptation in the majority environment. They also show how the community approaches modifies its tradition within Islamic and commercial discourse.
