Fear, Guilt, Hypocrisy and the Catholic Church in Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá memoár Andělin popel autora Franka McCourt z pohledu vlivu, jaký měla katolická církev na autorův život a tedy i jeho memoár. Andělin popel je často považován za ostrou kritiku katolické církve, která zdánlivě nesplnila svou funkci ochrany a podpory slabých a chudých. Cílem této práce je ukázat, že hlavní poklesek, kterého se církev dopustila, byl v rovině psychologické, kdy církev ve svých věřících zbytečně vyvolávala pocity strachu a viny. Díky velmi silné pozici, kterou katolická církev zastávala v Irsku v době autorova dětství, tedy ve dvacátých a třicátých letech dvacátého století, se její vliv promítal do všech ohledů života Irů. Tento vliv byl znatelný nejen v kostele, ale I ve školství a zdravotnictví, které měla katolická církev pod kontrolou. Aby bylo možno této moci lépe porozumět, tato práce nejprve zkoumá typy religiozity a chování věřících, tedy jakým způsobem přijímají a projevují svojí víru. Jedním z důsledků moci, kterou měla katolická církev nad svými věřícími bylo to, že kněží zdánlivě měli v rukou spásu či zatracení svých věřících. To vyvolávalo v lidech strach ze spáchání hříchu a ztráty věčného života. V důsledku toho také pociťovali vinu poté co zhřešili. Dalšími motivy v tomto memoáru je také motiv pokrytectví a Frankova snaha o útěk do Ameriky, která je v knize reprezentována jako naprostý opak Irska. Tato práce ukazuje na příkladech z knihy Andělin popel, jak velkou moc měli kněží nad věřícími a jak se následně projevoval strach, vina a pokrytectví v životě Franka a dalších obyvatel města Limerick.

Abstract:

This thesis examines Frank McCourt's memoir Angela's Ashes and the influence of the Catholic Church that it had on the author's life and therefore his memoir as well. Angela's Ashes is often considered harsh criticism of the Catholic Church, which seemingly did not fulfil its role of protecting and supporting the poor and the weak. This thesis aims to show that the main harm the Church did to the Catholics was psychological, when it inflicted them with unnecessary feelings of fear and guilt. Thanks to the strong position of the Catholic Church during the author's childhood, its influence was palpable in all aspects of the lives of the Irish; not only in church, but also in the schooling system and the health care. In order to better understand this power and influence, this thesis first explores three different types of religious behaviour, that is how Irish Catholics perceive and express their faith. One of the consequences of the power that the Church held was that the clergy could warrant salvation or damnation. The consequence were feelings of fear of committing a sin and going to hell, and also the feeling of guilt after violating Church’s rules and regulations. Other strong motifs in this memoir are also hypocrisy and Frank´s effort to escape Ireland and get to America, which is in the memoir portrayed as a complete opposite of Ireland. This thesis shows on examples from the book how important was the Catholic Church in Ireland and how fear, guilt and hypocrisy influenced the lives of Frank and other people living in Limerick.
