Relationship of knowledge about epilepsy and extent of stigmatization by classmates of child with epilepsy

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo analyzovat úroveň znalostí o epilepsii u spolužáků dítěte s tímto onemocněním, dále zjistit, jaká je vnímaná stigmatizace v těchto třídách a které faktory ovlivňují zjištěnou míru stigmatizace související s epilepsií. Celkem se výzkumu zúčastnilo 60 žáků s epilepsií (32 dívek a 28 chlapců) ve věku 8-15 let, navštěvujících běžné základní školy v Plzeňském, Karlovarském a Jihočeském kraji. Vedle nich dotazníky vyplnilo také 1049 spolužáků (485 dívek a 564 chlapců) z příslušných tříd. Byla potvrzena hypotéza, že znalosti dětí ve třídách navštěvovaných dítětem s epilepsií jsou vyšší ve srovnání s ostatními třídami. Dále jsme došli k závěru, že mezi vysokou mírou znalostí o epilepsii a nízkou mírou stigmatizace v rámci školní třídy není statisticky významná korelace. Míra stigmatizace ve třídách navštěvovaných žákem s epilepsií je však na mnohem nižší úrovni než ve třídách ostatních. Průměrná stigmatizace je nižší ve třídách, kde je většina žáků informována o epilepsii svého spolužáka, přičemž bylo prokázáno, že v těchto třídách míra stigmatizace související s epilepsií koreluje se sociometrickou pozicí žáka s epilepsií. Uvedené výsledky udávají první představu o dosud prakticky nezkoumaném tématu souvislostí znalostí o epilepsii a míry stigmatizace s ní související ve třídách, které navštěvují žáci s epilepsií a je možné na ně navázat v dalším výzkumu.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to analyse the level of knowledge about epilepsy among the classmates of the child with this condition, as well as to determine the level of perceived stigmatization in these classes and to evaluate which factors affected the stigmatization. 60 pupils with epilepsy (35 girls and 28 boys) aged 8-15 years attending regular primary schools in the Plzeňský, Karlovarský and Jihočeský regions of the Czech Republic were included in the research. In addition, 1049 of their classmates (485 girls and 564 boys) completed the questionnaires. We did not confirm that the level of knowledge of children in classes attended by a child with epilepsy is higher than in other classes. We also concluded that there is no statistically significant correlation between the high level of knowledge about epilepsy and the low level of stigmatization within the classroom. However, the level of stigmatization in classes attended by a pupil with epilepsy is much lower than that of the others. The average stigmatization is lower in the classes where a majority of pupils is aware of their classmate's epilepsy. Moreover, the level of stigma associated with epilepsy correlates with the sociometric position of the pupil with epilepsy in these classes. These presented results represent a first look at the previously unresearched topic of the context of knowledge about epilepsy and the level of stigmatization associated with it in the classes attended by pupils with epilepsy and can be followed up in further research.
