Viktor Šklovskij považoval ozvláštnění za základní metodu umění. Protože se lidské vnímání skutečnosti postupem času automatizuje, zaměřuje se umění na proces jeho obnovy. Tohoto cíle dosahuje tím, že nezvyklým způsobem prezentuje všední. Sergej Ejzenštejn a Vsevolod Pudovkin patřili mezi nejvýznamnější představitelé tzv. sovětské montážní školy. Viktor Shklovsky considered ostranenie to be the fundamental method of art. As human perception of reality becomes automatized over time, art focuses on the process of its renewal. It achieves this goal by presenting the commonplace in an unusual way. Sergei Eisenstein and Vsevolod Pudovkin were among the most prominent representatives of the so-called Soviet Montage movement.
