Dance in ancient Greece

Abstract:

V mé bakalářské diplomové práci se věnuji tématu tance v antickém Řecku. Mými archeologickými zdroji jsou převážně výjevy z vázového malířství, a to z doby archaické až po helénistickou, z různých částí Řecka. Na základě odborné literatury zde představím různá témata věnující se tanci a popíši k nim odpovíadjící obrazovou předlohu. V kapitole o všeobecných tématech proberu různé možné důvody k tanci: například svatby, rituály plodnosti, sklizeň nebo smutné události jako vyjadřování smutku na pohřbech. Nemohu opomenout zmínit tance k poctě řeckých bohů. Poté je práce rozdělena do kapitol, každá zaměřena na určitý druh tance. Jsou jimi komos, tančený na symposiích; chorus, součást divadla; geranos, připomínající Théseovo bloudění labyrintem; arkteia, posvátný tanec vykonávaný mladými dívkami a spojovaný s kultem Artemis; záhadný kalathiskos; a oklasma, původem z Persie a tančený v Řecku. Tyto druhy tance byly vybrány za základě důležitosti, zajímavosti a dostupnosti informací.

Abstract:

My thesis is devoted to dance in ancient Greece. My archaeological sources are mostly vase paintings from Archaic to Hellenistic period, from different parts of ancient Greece. On the basis of experiences from scientific literature, I present here various topics and describe images corresponding to them. In the chapter about generalities I discuss various possible reasons to dance: for instance weddings, rituals of fertility, harvest or sad reasons as an expression of mourning at funerals. I cannot omit to mention dances in honour of Greek gods. Subsequently the thesis is divided into different chapters, each focusing on a specific type of dance. They are komos, danced at banquets; chorus, a component of theatre; geranos, reminding Theseus’ wandering through the labyrinth; pyrrhike, an armed dance; arkteia, a sacred dance performed by girls and associated with the cult of Artemis; mysterious kalathiskos; and oklasma, originated in Persia and performed in Greece. Such specific types have been chosen by importance, interest and availibility of information.
