Toponymy and Ethnic Identity: A Case Study of the Czeh-Polish Borderlands

Abstract:

Tématem této diplomové práce je posuzování role jazyka a jeho významu v utváření identity národnostní menšiny prostřednictvím názvů jmen a značení. Stěžejní pro tuto práci je případová studie analyzující rozhovory s obyvateli obce Nýdek, nacházející se na území Těšínského Slezska. Hlavním tématem výzkumu byla otázka zavádění dvojjazyčných nápisů v obci, dále příčiny konfliktů, které se pojí se zaváděním těchto označení a hodnocení česko-polských vztahů. Pro pochopení situace je nutné v práci nastínit historické procesy a události, které současnému stavu předcházely a také popsat legislativní rámec, který práva národnostních menšin upravuje. Výsledkem práce je shrnutí hlavních poznatků, které vyplynuly ze získaných dat.

Abstract:

The topic of this diploma thesis is the assessment of the role of language and its importance in the formation of the identity of the national minority through the nomenclature of names and signs. The case study analysing interviews with the inhabitants of Nýdek, located in the territory of Těšín Silesia, is pivotal for this thesis. The main topic of the research was the question of the introduction of bilingual inscriptions in the village, as well as the causes of the conflicts related to the introduction of these signs and the evaluation of the Czech-Polish relations. In order to understand the situation it was necessary to outline in the thesis the historical processes and events that preceded the present situation and also to describe the legislative framework that regulates the rights of the national minorities. Thus the result of the thesis is a summary of the main findings resulting from the obtained data.
