V roce 1895 mírová smlouva ze Šimonoseki označila konec první čínsko-japonské války a na základě dohody byl Tchaj-wan postoupen Japonsku. Během následujících padesáti let japonské koloniální nadvlády Japonsko rozšiřovalo svůj vliv na Tchaj-wanu. In 1895, the Treaty of Shimonoseki marked the end of the first Sino-Japanese war, and according to the agreement, Taiwan was ceded to Japan. For the period of fifty years of Japanese colonial rule that followed, Japan was expanding its influence over Taiwan.
