The first Direct Presidential Election of the Czech Republic

Abstract:

V mé práci vysvětluji pojem přímé volby prezidenta republiky. Dále popisuji její historický vývoj. Zaměřuji se zejména na průběh našich prvních přímých prezidentských voleb, dále na předvolební kampaň, jež volbám předcházela. Zhodnocuji kandidáty na prezidentský post. Ve své práci čerpám i ze zkušeností s přímou volbou především na Slovensku, dále zmiňuji pravomoci prezidentů v Rakousku a Polsku. V závěru poukazuji na odlišnosti zákonných úprav těchto států s ústavním vymezením prezidenta České republiky.

Abstract:

This thesis describes the concept of direct election of the president as well as its historical development. Main focus is on the progress of our first direct presidential election and the election campaign, which preceded the elections. It also evaluates each candidate for the presidential post. This thesis is also based on experience with direct elections especially in Slovak Republic and mentions the authority of the President in Austria and Poland. In conclusion, I point out the differences between the law used in states mentioned above and the constitutional definition of the President of the Czech Republic.
