Social relations as predictors of alcohol consumption in young adulthood

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo zmapovat souvislosti mezi blízkými vztahy a konzumací alkoholu v mladé dospělosti. V kontextu dosavadních poznatků byla věnována pozornost zejména citové vazbě, sociální opoře a partnersko-rodičovskému závazku jako možným prediktorům množství konzumovaného alkoholu. Dále byly v souvislosti s těmito proměnnými mapovány i motivy konzumace stejně jako následky, které respondent alkoholu připisuje. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 618 respondentů ve věku 24-30 let. Na základě pilotního šetření přitom bylo upuštěno od zabývání se sociální oporou, neboť se mezi těmito proměnnými nepodařilo najít statisticky významné souvislosti. Oproti tomu citová vazba (resp. vyhýbavost a úzkostnost k blízkým osobám) i partnersko-rodičovský závazek se ukázaly být signifikantními prediktory množství konzumovaného alkoholu, a to i po kontrole proměnných jako je pohlaví a míra konzumace blízkých osob. Vztah mezi citovou vazbou a konzumací alkoholu byl přitom částečně mediován zvládacími motivy ke konzumaci. Dále se ukázalo, že citová vazba je signifikantním prediktorem následků (pozitivních i negativních), které respondent alkoholu připisuje, přičemž vzájemný vztah vysvětlovala zejména vyhýbavost a úzkostnost ve vztahu k partnerovi. V neposlední řadě byl potom partnersko-rodičovský závazek shledán signifikantním prediktorem nárazové nadměrné konzumace, kdy vyšší míra závazku vedla k nižší frekvenci výskytu tohoto fenoménu. Zajímavým zjištěním byla rovněž skutečnost, že množství konzumovaného alkoholu a s tím související proměnné byly s ohledem na míru konzumace blízkých osob nejvíce ovlivněny konzumací nejbližších přátel.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to explore the links between close relationships and alcohol use in young adulthood. In the context of present studies, particular attention was paid to the role of attachment, social support and relational commitment as potential predictors of alcohol consumption. Furthermore, in the context of these variables drinking motives were explored as well as the consequences attributed to alcohol. The sample consisted of 618 respondents aged 24-30. Based on the pilot study the social support was dropped out of further research because no significant relationship between alcohol consumption and this variable was found. In contrast, attachment (avoidance and anxiety to significant others) and relational commitment were found to be significant predictors of drinking, even after controlling for gender and alcohol consumption of significant others.. The relationship between attachment and alcohol use was partially mediated by coping motives for drinking. Furthermore, it was found that the attachment was a significant predictor of the consequences (both positive and negative) attributed to alcohol when the relationship was explained mainly by avoidance and anxiety to the romantic partner. Finally, the relational commitment was found as a significant predictor of binge drinking, when higher level of the commitment led to a lower incidence of this phenomenon. There was also an interesting finding that alcohol consumption and related variables were explained mainly by the level of consumption of close friends rather than partner or parents.
