Cílem této diplomové práce je identifikovat co nejvíce faktorů a příčin, které vedly k secesi Jižního Súdánu. Při hledání těchto příčin jsem se inspiroval teorií Johna Wooda. Ten ve své práce John Wood představil pět předpokladů k úspěšné secesi. Ve své práci jsem vycházel z historického vývoje Jižního Súdánu. Jižní Súdán byl historicky velmi odlišný od zbytku Súdánu. The aim of this diploma thesis was to find out the causes of South Sudan to declare independence. This thesis does not judge if the secession of South Sudan was right or not. it is only supposed to present what was happening before this secession.
