The Main Character as a Sacrifice in Patrick Süskind`s "Das Parfum. Die Geschichte eines Mörders"

Abstract:

Patrick Süskind's novel "Das Parfum. Geschichte eines Mörders (1985) ends with a scene that is a postmodern variation on a ritual human sacrifice. The motive of the sacrifice runs throughout the whole work: the victims are girls who die by the hands of the genius perfumer and murderer Grenouille; in the end, he becomes the final victim. The work will focus on the main character of Süskind's novel and her sacrificial role. Is Grenouille a typical "scapegoat" (according to René Girard's victim criteria)? The role of the victim as redemption from crime and as the highest act of art and the resulting interpretation possibilities will be examined. The goal of the thesis is to connect the victim as a motive and the character of the protagonist with several interpretation horizons that are typical for a postmodern novel. The contribution of the work is the demonstration that these interpretive horizons can be described on the example of a sacrificed hero, because the sacrifice is a part of myths, but also of (post)modern stories.

Román Patricka Süskinda "Das Parfum. Geschichte eines Mörders (1985) končí scénou, která je postmoderní variací na rituální lidskou oběť. Motiv oběti prochází celým dílem: obětmi jsou dívky, které umírají rukou geniálního parfuméra a vraha Grenouille; v závěru se konečnou obětí stává on sám. V práci bude pozornost zaměřena na hlavní postavu Süskindova románu a její obětní roli. Je Grenouille typickým "obětním beránkem (podle kritérií oběti Reného Girarda)? Zkoumána bude dále role oběti jako vykoupení ze zločinu a jako nejvyšší umělecký čin a z ní vyplývající interpretační možnosti. Cílem práce je propojení oběti jako motivu a postavy hlavního hrdiny s několikerými interpretační horizonty, které jsou typické pro postmoderní román. Přínosem práce je pak ukázka toho, že tyto interpretační horizonty lze popsat na příkladu obětovaného hrdiny, protože oběť je součástí mýtů, ale i (post)moderních příběhů.
