Violence in media: Discourse analysis of the rape visualization in chosen films

Abstract:

Tato práce analyzuje diskurs zobrazování znásilnění ve vybraných filmech, jenž je zkoumán s ohledem na sociokulturní kontext daného fenoménu za pomoci specifických feministických filmových konceptů, kterými jsou hypotézy Molly Haskell o zobrazování ženy na plátně jako méněcenné, teorie vizuální slasti Laury Mulvey a symbolického vyloučení hrdinky z narativní struktury Teresy de Lauretis. Problematika znásilnění je nahlížena ne ve smyslu individuálního aktu, ale spíše jako fenomén, jenž hraje ústřední roli v kontextu mocenských vztahů patriarchální společnosti. Analyzované filmy, které jsou součástí vybraného vzorku, konstruují specifické reprezentace znásilnění a předávají tak divákovi/divačce určité informace o této problematice. Udržují tedy povahu mystiky znásilnění, v rámci níž je žena vizualizovaná jako pasivní oběť a muž jako aktivní pachatel nebo vykonavatel spravedlivé pomsty.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the discourse of the rape visualization in chosen films. The thesis also concerns about its sociocultural context using the theoretical feminist concepts, such as Molly Haskell’s concept of imaging woman as the second rated, Laura Mulvey’s theory of visual pleasure, or the symbolic exclusion of a woman heroine from a narrative in the work of Teresa de Lauretis. The question of rape is not treated in the sense of the individual act, but more like a phenomenon which plays the major role in the structure of the patriarchal power nexus. The analyzed films frame specific representations of rape, provide certain information on this phenomenon, and carry on the cultural concept of the rape mystique, where the female is pictured as a passive victim and the male as an active offender or an executor of the just revenge.
