Communication with patients with long-term quantitative impaired consciousness

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je zaměřena na problematiku komunikace s pacientem s dlouhodobou kvantitativní poruchou vědomí. Péče o pacienty trpící toto poruchou je pro zdravotnický personál velmi obtížná a poskytování zdravotnických služeb ovlivňuje i neschopnost efektivní komunikace s těmito osobami. V teoretické části práce je definován pojem vědomí, a jaké mohou být poruchy vědomí. Dále je věnována pozornost problematice dlouhodobých kvantitativních poruch vědomí (kóma, vegetativní stav a locked-in syndrom). Součástí teoretické části práce je i specifikace doporučených postupů správné komunikace s pacientem s dlouhodobou kvantitativní poruchou vědomí se zaměřením na koncept bazální stimulace. Pro zpracování empirické části práce bylo využito kvalitativních výzkumných metod. O spolupráci byly požádány sestry pečující o pacienty s dlouhodobou kvantitativní poruchou vědomí. Pro výběr informátorů byla použita metoda snowball. Informace byly získány prostřednictvím polostrukturovaného rozhovoru, který byl zaměřen na zmapování názorů a pocitů oslovených sester při komunikaci s pacientem s dlouhodobou kvantitativní poruchou vědomí.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on communication with patients with long-term quantitative disorder of consciousness. Caring for patients suffering from this disorder is (for the medical staff) very difficult and providing these patients with health services is also affected by the impossibility to communicate effectively with these individuals. In the theoretical part the concept of consciousness is defined as well as which disorders of consciousness are known. Attention is paid also to the issue of long-term quantitative disorders of consciousness (coma, vegetative state and locked-in syndrome). The theoretical part of this thesis includes specification of recommended procedures for propper communication with patients suffering from long-term quantitative disorder of consciousness with special focus on the concept of basal stimulation. In the empirical part, qualitative research methods were used. I have asked for cooperation several nurses who care for patients with long-term quantitative discorder of consciousness. For the selection of informants I have used „snowball“ method. Information was collected through semi-structured interview, which was focused on mapping the opinions and feelings of nurses surveyed which they have about communication with patients with long-term quantitative disorder of consciousness.
